Nobody understands Americans. We don't even understand ourselves. |

Of course they can. Whether they choose to is another issue. We speak the same language with minor colloquial variations. |

Sorry, what was that? Can someone please translate, I haven't a clue what this person is saying.
:P sometimes I have to look up what things are like I didn't know what broiling was, so I looked it up and found out it meant grilling, besides that I normally know how to translate American to English and vice versa. |

Of course we can, don't be so anserine.
It's just unfortunate that Americans have changed the meanings of several English words, ie: @ss, f@ggot, chips, gay, f@g, suspenders, pu$$y etc. |

In the linguistic sense only. Yup we get what they're saying, but we have to avoid frequently shaking our heads at just how strange some of it is. Americans wanted to say aluminium in their own way so badly that they altered the way they spelt it, that last i was obviously giving them too much trouble :) |

Eh?? What?? Could you repeat that?? |

What's not to understand? If you are talking about the way you speak, of course we do! We are all speaking English aren't we? (Okay, Americans speak their own version of the English language but still, it is recogniseable in the margins as the same language..!).
If you are asking about policies, in particular US foreign and domestic policy, I have to confess, no I do not understand what is up there. How can Dubbya be so self-righteous about putting other countries 'to rights' when his own domestic policies are in such a mess? Witness your plummeting dollar and his shambolic welfare reform proposals...feh!
If you are asking if we understand why Bush is in the White House at all I have to say no, I do not understand that either!
Or if you are asking whether we understand the paradox in the majoity of the US nation (i.e. those who voted) who take a strong stance on abortion and stem cell research yet feeling able to support Dubbya in his attempts to raze another country to the ground in a bid to introduce 'democracy'...well, that I will NEVER get.
Of course, I am speaking for myself only here! :) |

I think it's an okay question to ask...innocent,really. I am American and I had a little bit of a hard time understanding the British when I flew. It's not that I'm stupid, it's just that accents can do that to people. Not a bad question at all. |

I don't understand. Kidding - anyway I'm Irish so I can't comment. Though my husband and kids are English and they seem to be just as bright as any other bright person of any nationality. I love some of these questions - they make no sense at all! |

If you mean language, most European young people can speak English. It is amazing how they did it, but they do. If you talk about American pop culture, 50% of the young people in most of the large tourist cities understand quite well. American movies and TV programs are quite easy to find on Western European TV screens. I heard French will pretend they do not understand English, even if they do. But I have never experienced it first hand. |
