Can you fly from the UK using an Irish Passport?

My wife has an Irish passport and wishes to fly to Spain next year. Does anyone know if she can use the passport to fly from the UK or would she have to consider applying for a British passport. I checked the passport website and as usual I found nothing on this subject.

Hello Gorey Alan,
Yes she can indeed, as long as the passport is still within its dates, she can fly from the uk to almost anywhere in the world, and not have any problems at the desks, she can apply for a British Passport but I am certain this won't be neccesary, maybe though a photo ID of her driving licence wouldn't go amiss, as it would prove where she lives in the UK, but remember this point too, ye are from the uk, and we are all in the EU, So a passport is not really needed in these countries, but always handy to have in case ye are asked to produce ID, and Spain is in the EU as are England, Ireland and most, if not all the European Countries Hope this helps to put ye minds at rest..Tony M

yes British and Irish passports are interchangeable.

And in fact any European Union citizen with a valid passport from an EU state is free to fly within the EU as and when they like - one of the many benefits of Britain being a member of the European Union

PETE
Of course - there are plenty of Irish in Britain who fly in and out on Irish passports - passport officials do not differenciate between British and other EU/EEA passports for entry/exit in the UK.

Why not?? You can fly from the Bahamas and Bermuda with an American passport. I don't see why not.

hope this helps
am :+)

Of course she can, the idea of having a passport is to travel anywhere, not just in and out of the Irish republic.

Because your wife is Irish she can apply for a British Subject passport, but avoid this if you can because many countries including the U.S.A. make it significantly more difficult for British subjects to get visa's than British citizens.

This is because Hong Kong residents can also apply for British Subject passports, the U.S. was concerned that it would be swamped with Hong Kong Chinese, and brought in very strict visa restrictions for British Subjects in the nineties before Hong Kong was handed back to china. British Citizens do not have the same restrictions

I'm Irish and living in UK.

Your wife will have no problems travelling to anywhere within European Union. I never have. I'm travelled from UK to Barcelona without issues.

I have travelled to Egypt and Bulgaria too - in that case I did the same as my wife and sent my passport to the respective embassy to get it stamped. Again no problems.

Yes. It doesn't matter what country you're a citizen of, all you need is a passport from that country.

For example: An American living in London (on a work visa, say) can fly out of just about any airport in the world to just about any airport in the world (with the exceptions of Cuba, North Korea and Iran, which require permission from the US government, but that's another question entirely...).

b97st
Yes.

Ireland is part of the EU as is Spain - if your wife has a full Irish passport she can travel freely within the EU.

Citizen DeCat
Yes.

The whole point of passports is to allow you to go to other countries.

Also, in the EU, no visa will be required.
