Chester's good: it has city walls, The Rows (elevated shops in a mock Tudor style) decent specialist shops, Roman remains, Georgian architecture, more antique shops than you can shake a stick at, loads of old pubs and a lovely compact centre you can easily walk around, but:-
1. It can be very rough at night.
2. The city is blighted with braying dolts with pseudo-London accents and no manners - you'll soon get fed up having to step into the road to go around these arrogant chumps.
3. The famous Gateway Theatre, Chester's only professional theatre, was demolished last year in a shopping centre development and there are no plans for its replacement. A Philistine town indeed!
4. Don't bother driving there, there's nowhere to park especially at week ends. The station and the walk into he centre is lovely though.
5. Chester Zoo isn't actually in Chester but some way out.
6. I'd suggest you came to stay in Liverpool with its five theatres, two dozen galleries and museums, new restaurants, innumerable late bars and safe streets. There are regular local trains to Chester every 15 minutes from Central Station (beneath Lewis's Department Store) and you can 'do' Chester in a day!
N.B. If you are a fan of Hollyoaks the soap that has made Chester glamorous, this is actualled filmed in Liverpool so if you want to spot any of the cast (or indeed any 'celebrities') Liverpool's the place to go! Chester is full of accountants and solicitors. |

Virgin Trains West Coast run from London Euston to Crewe. Then you would have to get an Arriva Trains Wales service from there to Chester.
You'd have to book in advance if you want cheap tickets though. If not, I think the mega bus idea might be better.
Chester Zoo is in Chester! I've been there a couple of times, and recommend it. |

I also live in Liverpool, not too far from Chester, I adore my home city but since this question is about Chester I'll stick to that.
The architecture in Chester is beautiful-very historic and qaint.
Roman walls and remains of Roman ampitheatre
A walk by the river Dee is lovely on a nice day and you can board a show boat there
Usual tour buses
Lovely pubs-really old pubs, however, I did find when I went that they didn't serve food when the races were on, however, there are plenty of restuarants close by
Good shopping
Out in the surrounding Chesire county you can also visit Chester Zoo, Blueplanet aquarium, Beeston castle or if you like countryside there's plenty of it
Overall, I find Chester a lovely, cosy, picturesque, warm city steeped in history. I do prefer Liverpool when it comes to the arts, friendliness and vibrancy but Chester is a little gem of a city which I'm happy is close by if I ever fancy a change of scenery |

With MegaBus, you depart London's Victoria Coach Station at 2:30 p.m. to arrive in Chester at Hoole Way at 7:00 p.m. and a seat costs £14.00 and the booking fee is £0.50.
http://www.megatrain.com/uk/
Other is National Express: http://www.nationalexpress.com/ - funfares is cheaper if anything.
I took National Express bus from London's Victoria Coach to Chester with my boyfriend's mother to visit one of the twin brothers (her son).
Chester is a really nice place to visit.
Don't forget to see Chester Cathedral, The Mall of Chester, you can also see Chester Town Hall and many others. |

Virgin West Coast run 3 or 4 trains a day direct from London Euston to Chester and on to the North Wales coast, otherwise you have to change to an Arriva Trains Wales train in Crewe.
Plenty of shopping, sights, the Roman amphitheatre, the walls, the zoo, |

I think from Paddington to Chester for rail. Youi can look it up on the railways website and book your jouney. The cheapest of course is National Express but it takes abour 4 hours.
Being a Liverpool man I would say go to Lliverpool instead
However you will find much to do inchester Shopping, pubs a Cathederal and lots of Roman History projects. Boating etc. i have never been but most peole reckon tha tif you go when the Chester Races on on it is a good day out.
If you wish to visit liverpool there is a direct train to Liverpool Lime Street and Central Station (which is best fro shopping about every 30 minutes) If yo do that the staions are James Street, ( for Albert Dock) Moorfields, Lime Street (which is the main station Central and then James Street before it gooes back across to Chester
I have many many happy memories of Chester |
