No, you're CONFUSED.
England is a country, capital London.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are the other, separate countries which make up the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland is competely separate, and, as its name suggests, a Republic. |

England is, well, England. Then there is Wales, united to England for centuries. Then Scotland, united since James I (James VI of Scotland) in the 17 century. These make up Great Britain.
Then there is the island generally called Ireland, which comprises Eire in the south, and Northern Ireland, in the north. Eire is a totally independent separate country. Northern Ireland is part of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. |

This question is now coming up on an almost daily basis - the Yahoo "search for question" box will answer for you.
The Wikipedia link below is accurate.
Briefly, the properly named "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" is fairly self explanatory as long as you appreciate that the "United Kingdom" comprises of England, Scotland and Wales, all originally seperate countries.
So the United Kingdom when added to Northern Ireland becomes Great Britain.
The only piece to complete the jigsaw, i.e. what is the "British Isles" = Great Britain plus the bit of Ireland that became independent, which the Irish Republic, also known as Southern Ireland or Eire. |

Interesting question so starred. People living in England well know that England is just one of the countries that that make up the UK as I'm sure many of your answers will have told you. The rest of the world however think of the whole British
Isles as England. I am both British and English and an expat
and understand the world view, we are all English to the rest
of the world no matter how much we seek to divide ourselves. |

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (usually shortened to the United Kingdom, the U.K., or Britain[6]) is a country[7] and sovereign state to the north-west of mainland Europe. It comprises the island of Great Britain, the north-east part of the island of Ireland and many small local islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK with a land border, sharing it with the Republic of Ireland.[8][9][10] Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel, and the Irish Sea. It is linked to France by the Channel Tunnel.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy comprising four constituent countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The current monarch is Queen Elizabeth II who is also Queen and Head of State of fifteen other Commonwealth Realms including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Jamaica. The Crown Dependencies of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, formally possessions of the Crown, are not part of the UK but form a federacy with it.[11] The UK has fourteen overseas territories,[12] all remnants of the British Empire, which at its height encompassed almost a quarter of the world's land surface.
Britain was the world's foremost power during the 19th and early 20th century,[13] but the economic cost of two world wars and the decline of its empire in the latter half of the 20th century diminished Britain's role and status in global affairs. The UK remains a major political, cultural, economic and nuclear military power; it holds a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, is a Great Power and is a member of the G8, NATO, the European Union and the Commonwealth of Nations. |
