Absolutely 100% deserved.
All you sad mancs - are you still jealous that your dirty, crime infested town wasn't chosen? Get over it - LIVERPOOL WON FAIR AND SQUARE! |

Why wouldn't it have deserved it?
The competition was open and fair, and Liverpool won a ballot amongst the judges who had visited every city and decided Liverpool was the best candidate in a very strong field.
As for the old "seen more culture in a yogurt/ whatever"
Liverpool has more Georgian town houses than Bath which is famous for its Georgian town houses.
Has the worlds oldest School of Tropical medicine (no London's is not the oldest) which Bill Gates has Just awarded another multi-million pound grant, and is saving millions of lives throughout the world with its work eradicating malaria.
Has more grade 1 listed buildings than any city outside London more parks per head of population and trees per head of population than any city in the UK.
Of course it deserved it, the question is ridiculous, a better question to ask would be why have the Government not funded it?
Compare it too the £1 Billion for the useless millennium dome, the £16 Billion plus cross London rail link, the Euro star terminal and track upgrade which cost £7 Billion, or the £12 Billion plus for the Olympics which is being stolen from charities through the NATIONAL lottery.
Seems anything in London and the South has no problem getting monumental government funding, but a paltry £20 million for a Northern city is beyond their means! |

Yes it did. It has a lot more to offer than people give it credit for and deserves the regeneration that is being put in to it |

It did, some time ago. Liverpool is a great city and has benefited from some much needed regeneration thanks to this. |

Yes they won a competition fair and square. i seem to remember the same sneers aimed at Glasgow when they won it . I accept that they have had many difficulties mainly through the well known ineptness of Liverpool City Council who seem to do more damage to Liverpool and it's reputation than any drunken Yobo |

It deserved the chance to show off how much culture it has, with many museums and art galleries, tate modern included, good sporting facilitlies, many, many theatres. Lots of bands including the beatles and mersey sound bands. It did deserve the chance to prove itself. |

I thought at first that they did. But nothing seems to be finished, so I'd have to say I have some doubts now |

I like Liverpool, live near, but somehow can't manage to see that much CULTURE in the city, some foreign people, a museum or two, and a gallery. Nothing out of the ordinary. If someone could explain why Liverpool stands out over any other British city in terms of its culture, please tell me.
I do however believe it was in dire need of investment, therefore I think the capital of Culture award will benefit the city, although the money should have been being invested already. |

Seems like a contradiction in terms to me! |

The only culture you get in Liverpool is the sort that grows in Petri dishes! |
