I find most American dialects warm and interesting , and yes i can differentiate between some dialects
As with British accents ,some are loud and brash , but mostly, they are warm and mellow and distinctive of their region .
If you like people, you enjoy the variation in accents .
London ---viz--- New York
Essex --Viz -Dallas
Gloucester shire--viz-- Illinois
they may be different
but i love them all
We have only, a small pond, between us, after all

I think most of the younger Brits think the American accents are pretty cool. Personally, I could tell a New York accent from an Alabama accent, but that would probably be about it! Incidentally, it's nice to see a question about nationalities without any implied criticisms. |

For sure we Brits love the American accent Becky!! My gorgeous adorable girlfriend is from Alabama & love love love her accent. That Southern drawl just gets me every time!! She could talk to me about any old trash just so long as i hear her voice.
She can stop a room when she walks in.Her accent is the icing on the cake.I love her so much.
Yep for sure i can tell the diff between someone from The South & a New Yorker. It's their accent for starters & the way they pronounce stuff. But i guess having my honey as a Southerner gives me an advantage!! |

It depends on where. Most brits can tell a texan drawl but beyond that, good luck. People like myself who work in multinational companies tend to have the advantage because we are constantly in teleconferences/videoconferences over the pond. I for one find that a gentil southern accent is very attractive whereas a texan drawl labels someone as either a cowboy or a predjudiced gun toting gay marriage hating numpty.
Equally however, I find that Americans make little to no distinction between British Accents of which there are many.
I confuse everybody because I grew up half in France and half in England so I now have an accent that throws everyone for a loop. |

Some American accents are o.k. and others are awful especially if they are loud. |

We like some of your accents. Like every country some are harsh, some unintelligible.Having travelled quite a bit in america, I am able to tell the difference between the various accents.
I am scottish & whenever I travel abroad i have to make an effort to adjust my accent so that people can understand me. I am from the North East of Scotland & we tend to speak very quickly & have words in our dialects that are not used anywhere else in UK. |

Actually there are some awful American accents and some really cool ones. I love the way some New York bands talk and my brother married a southern Belle tho am not sure about her accent in all honesty. I think I will go to America as it sounds like I will have plenty of dates. There are many British accents tho so I am not sure if Americans get the idea we are all polite from film rather than reality. Ps wanna fix me up I sound very charming and am quite hot for 37 lol |

It depends. Most of us really hate those anonymous over-enthusiastic California accents, but a gentle American accent is OK. The thing with accents is that they automatically draw attention - so whilst an Irish accent in Dublin is nothing special, in the middle of Manchester it seems irresistably sexy because it's different. Same in New York an American accent isn't that hot, but the New York twang overheard in a cafe in London might well raise our interest.
What always amuses me is that what most Americans think of as a "British" accent that they've fallen in love with is a very Home Counties accent with rounded vowels (what most Brits call "posh") and only spoken by about 5% of us. When I went to the US everyone thought I was South African or Australian because I didn't sound anything like what they thought of as a "British" accent!
Maybe it's just because I'm not used to it, but I can distinguish between North and South US accents, and identify a strong Boston, New York or a typical "Hollywood" accent- but in all honesty, I don't think there's anywhere near as much difference between different US accents as there is between different British ones. |

Yes we can tell the difference between your accents
And i like some american accents but not all
A strong new york accent isnt attractive at all but a soft southern accent is very sexy |

Female New York accents are awful! Male are OK.
Many others lovely too........ |

Yes I can tell the difference between regional American accents. Although I don't like them all, I was in Florida last year and found that accent to be irritating. They speak as if they are talking to a 5 year old child. But maybe that's just the people I came across. |

It's not the accent that is important but the way you say things, a little more direct than we Brits (and that comes across as rude). Not just this of course many of your countrymen seem incapable of speaking quietly, they just shout loudly even when sitting at the same table together. Why is this?
I have a few American friends here in Bangkok, and it is not the accent that I judge them on but their civility, mode of talk and above all their lack of arrogance (or not). |

Some are easy on the ear, some aren't as nice. Annoys me though, when US ladies talk through their teeth as if theyre ventriliquists, them I have difficulty understanding. Any accent has to be better than Brum or Manc |

yes we can telkl the difference. i like american accents just so long as what they are saying doesn't include things such as 'they were so like...' or 'ya'll'. these sayings are just stupid and do you no favours at all. |

Americans have quite distinctive accents, much like the UK. Trouble is what sort of accent from the British Isles is your best? Remember even a differance of a few miles can create a differnt accent pronounciation and dialect. For Instance a London Accent may differ from East End to West End, North and South of the Thames, also differ from suburbian London to differing Home Counties, this in a very small area. It is the same all over.
So 'Yanks' to us do have some strange sounding voices, and sometimes can be quite hard to understand.
The nicest i have heard is the Mid Western style accent, the most annoying Brooklyn. |

Define "British" accent. Do you mean Scottish, English or Welsh? Do you mean an Edinburgh, London or Cardiff accent? Don't you realise that the UK is made up of several different nations & that your term "British" is a sweeping generalisation.
Do I like American accents? Nope, whenever I hear one I just picture Bush & his cronies in my head & get REAL mad! |
