Do americans realise ???? |
i have seen on here people complaining about petrol (gas) prices , you are paying $3.17 a gallon, in the uk we pay approx the equivalent of $9.84, you think you have got it bad,, wanna swap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Additional Details i do appreciate that we get free health care and dental treatment, and i suppose because i have never been to usa i didn't realise the distance thing, but i still think our prices are horrendous, our government are ripping us off |

First of all, it is your own taxes that account for at least half of your gasoline price.
But in the UK, everything is close by. A store is maybe 0.5 mile away. All the way across the country is a few hundred miles.
Here in the USA you have to commute 20 miles to work. To drive to my parents is 600 miles. You use a lot more gas because the roads are set up that you have to. |

We have to put up with Bush too. |

I lived in Canada last year and I was shocked at how cheap petrol is!!!! However, having said that it's a huge place and they use their cars a lot more...but why buy a gas guzzler? Why not get a car that doesn't use so much sodding petrol?!
But, I also found that at least here we have decent public transport between cities etc. In Canada there is next to none...
And for the person who said that we drive hardly anywhere, for me it's a 200 mile drive to work every day...and it's 20 miles to the supermarket/petrol station...so everyone is different, some people drive next to nowhere, other people drive everywhere!
**edit**
Yeah, we pay tax for our healthcare and it's definitely worth it!! We pay 11% NI tax which covers pension, healthcare, incapacity benefits etc. I broke my leg a few years back and it cost me nothing...6 days in hospital, 9 months of physio and 2 ambulance trips for free...in US that would have made me bankrupt!!!
And you may have Bush, but we had Blair...he was like a lapdog for Bush...that's got to be worse!! |

We don't get free health care in the UK. I think that if you look at my wage slip every month you'll see that I pay, as do all taxpayers.
Apart from that though - petrol is v expensive in UK, it rains a lot, and the country is being over run by hoodies and yobs. |

Its true us Brits pay more for gas/petrol, but you know what, I would prefer to pay that much for petrol than have to pay for medical insurance or go bankrupt because of medical bills or pay $400 for a prescription.
Also in Britain we have public transport everywhere, you can get a bus or a train anywhere, compared to the USA which hardly has any public transport, especially in the south or smaller towns.
You know, I left the UK about 4 years ago, I was sick of it there, I thought the USA would be a much better place to live, Now I am not so sure, believe me we have it quite good in the UK. |

Don't forget that a US gallon is smaller than a British gallon - the actual cost of petrol in Britain is roughly equivalent to $8.05 per US gallon.... |

OUCH! Ours just went up to 3.05 and that's the highest I've ever seen it. |

I want to know where gas is $3.17 a gallon- It's $3.25-26 in my area. $3.17 sounds like a bargain!!!! |

Yes, that is in fact a lot however we are not used to these prices as they keep slipping up up and away. Just as you are not used to paying such a high price however are used to paying much more than we are typically.
I pay $3.70 in San Francisco, CA |

gas where i live (north jersey) is $2.95 per gallon. If I had to pay almost $10 a gallon I guess I would have to give up my big SUV, huh? Yeah, you guys do get your health and dental paid for through higher taxes, but I am against this in the US. I'm young and rarely get sick enough to visit a doctor as it is, so I would be getting ripped off by the higher taxes. I think Americans and Brits just look at things differently. I can't imagine universal health care in the US and can't imagine the British doing away with it. We're both happy with our systems I think.
Edit: I would really like to know what disease Meg24 has that she pays $400 for a prescription. That's an insane exaggeration. |

UK residents make more money than Americans. Also there's 350 million in America and less than 50 million in the UK. Probably at least 250 million Americans drive everywhere.
Also I agree with the guy who said we have to put up with Bush. |

I know we always moan about our fuel costs, but we really shouldn't as like one of your answers has already pointed out we dont have to pay for things like going to hospital for treatment!
Fuel is expensive though! Hehe. |
