I can only speak for myself; I personally like the American accent; my girlfriend is Californian, in fact, and I love her accent (but I would say that, wouldn't I!) Midwestern accents I quite like; they sound almost Irish to me, sometimes. I find Southern US accents sound a little funny...I guess I kind of associate that accent with stereotypical rednecks, which is unfortunate because I'm sure most Southerners are not that way at all, but there you go. I've been watching a lot of The Sopranos recently and the New Jersey accent is really growing on me; it's quite a tough accent to imitate properly, too. Oh and the Bostonian accent (which I only grew really familiar with in the Scorcese movie, The Departed) is really hilarious to me.
In general though, I like the standard American accent; it's quite pleasing to the ears, though one issue I have is, like, how some Americans, like, use the word 'like' about five times every, like, sentence. Most use much better English than British people, though. I don't agree with the common British tendency to see Americans as bastardizing our language; Americans are nearly always much more eloquent speakers, and have far better spelling and punctuation than the British, who are frankly dire at these aspects, for the most part.
Hope that helps!

What annoys me most is not so much the accent, but American abuse of the English language. |

I don't really mind too much which accent you have - as long as I can understand you and you have something sensible to say. |

Some do, Some don't................ I like the accent of American girls (some of my best friends are American chicks), especially compared to the accents of some of the women in this country (sorta towards Bradford / Wigan kinda area I think), who sound scary.
Can't stand the accent of some of the younger American guys when they're over here with their girlfriends though......... they sound whiney & vomit inducing when they start "sweet talking" them in the streets. |

American accents aren't well-liked only because they're overexposed.
It's all over TV and other media.
We can't appreciate it if it's shoved down our throats day in and day out.
It's like the saying goes, you don't know what you've got til it's gone. |

Well, it depends. A lot of the time, it's noticeable but not annoying or enjoyable to listen to. Sometimes though, Americans with really strong accents, nasal accents or are very loud are annoying. The Valley girl accent can be annoying, you know, this sort of conversation:
Valley Girl 1: Oh my gawd! You wouldn't guess what I just heard! I was talking to Ryan and he was like, "I think Samantha is such a tart," and I was like, "I thought you liked Samantha" and he was like...
Valley Girl 2: Whatever!
I know that's stereotypical, but it's based on a conversation I heard near the Eiffel Tower, of all places. And was really really annoying. But if you're not like that, and are considerate and not overly loud, then it won't bother me. I quite like the Southern US accents. |

My dad always said:
Never worry about your accent, it's just where you're from, but speak clearly.
I'm from the North-East of England, where we certainly have a whole bunch of regional accents, so the wisdom of his words is particularly pertinent. It's worked well for me and I try to apply it to others.
In reply to your question, it depends on the speaker and what's being said. |

I don't particularly like it, but when I have stayed in America for longish periods it starts to sound normal and when I bump into other Brits I can't tell if they are Australian or British. |

Yes, I had a friend in the army (he was training with us S F), and he came from South Carolina, I thought he had a great accent and I find that type of drawl is attractive on men and women . |

If you want an honest reply I'd have to say no. It seems a bit harsh. We also hate it when Americans say 'I love your cute British accent' (or similar). Sorry :-( |

It's all a matter of a opinion.
We hear your accents so much in the media, that
they don't seem all that exciting to hear one.
Although i would say that British people doing American accents are better than Americans trying to put on any British Accent. Eeek. |

I don't want to be rude but truthfully, No.....generally the brits don't like American Accents. I'm from London btw.
But it does also depend on the person, i have recently made friends with a native Californian who is now studying at my university and i completely forget that she has an American accent at times. Its soo weird, she has similar humour so it bypasses me. :D
I hope this helps.

In my experience, no. They say it sounds nasally and loud. Then again, there's a lot of things about us Americans that they don't seem to like. LOL!!! |

Yes we do like American accents. I've been listening to American accents since WW2 here in London when hundreds of thousands of GIs came here.

No, I get really irritated, especially with the Californian type accent, it seems to take you guys ages to finish a sentence because its always full of 'likes' or 'totallys' and 'oh my gaaaaad' |

We do like the American accent. However it can be quite annoying to us in a quiet restaurant if they are too loud. We also do not like it when they abuse the word "like" and "totally" as in:
We were like going on the train to Edin borrow (how Americans pronounce Edinburgh) and it was like totally late and we were like saying we are totally not going to get there in time.
We pronounce it Ed in Burr Uhh by the way. |

No, it drives me insane. It sounds to camp and Americans can't properly pronounce some words. |
