Do people in the UK consider an adult without a driving license stupid? ?

No, living in London owning a car is a time wasting exercise, it costs a fortune to maintain & it's next to impossible to find somewhere to park it - public transport, despite the whinging you hear, is really good. The only time you really need a car is to go outside of London.

If I lived in the country or outside of London where the public transport was a bit sparse then I might reconsider my position on obtaining a driving licence & getting a car.

No

Why should they

some people have no interest in learning to drive, and that's fine

I can't swim, so the same question could apply

No. But it is licence, not license.

Noun = licence
Verb = to license.

I just consider that person never saw a need to drive.

pirate_princess
No, especially if you live in London, it's almost quicker not to drive.

no. a hell of a lot of people with driving licences are stupid though.

not stupid but depends if your going to drive without one then thats stupid

From 1959-1964 Britain had a Minister of Transport who didn't drive. That was Ernest Marples. He cycled to work every day. It was he who introduced yellow lines and parking meters to Britain's roads,so he wasn't popular with most people. He was also Postmaster General,so he probably wasn't stupid. A car or van would have been useful for me a few times, but I've never had one and don't regret it. A lot of my friends don't drive either, including Mike, who has a PhD in Microbiology. He most certainly isn't stupid.

Gillian K
I sincerely hope not, although it is harder for us non-drivers. There are many reasons for not driving and I don't think stupidity is one of them. I am not allowed to drive due to poor vision and I do feel that I've missed out on something good.

DANNIE M
it not stupid not to be able to drive as many people here do not need to however it would be stupid for an adult to drive without holding a proper licence

No I don't think so. I cycle which is cheaper and kinder to the environment. In my mind that's smarter.

Orla C
I don't see why they would.

Normally an adult would not have a driver's licence if they had been diagnosed as epileptic or had a similar condition, or if they had extremely poor eyesight. None of those conditions mean you're stupid, but it does mean that driving would be dangerous.

samwood
no, it would be unacceptably negative to think that

OK bin there donit, how come we have the lowest accident rate in the world. To the original question, my brother certainly is not stupid and does not have a licence.

Not stupid but irritating. My other half has a motorcycle licence but not one for a car. Means I can never ever have a drink if we go out. Maybe he's not so stupid..............

The stupid ones get someone else to take their test. So I've heard.

Sasha
If they were driving a car, then yeah, I would consider it very stupid to drive without a licence.

If they didn't attempt to drive a car, then no, of course I wouldn't consider them stupid. I'm 35 and have never taken a driving lesson, and don't ever plan to. I've got no interest in learning to drive. I can't be bothered, and I'm not sure I'd make a good driver anyway.

If someone isn't interested in doing something, it doesn't mean they're stupid. I would find it much more expensive to run a car, anyway. I can walk, or take a short bus journey, to most of the places I go, so I think I'm much better off not having the expense of having a car.

markus
this is 1 question you wont find on the yank answers page bcos if they never had a driving licence how would they be able to go to mcdonalds

steffi
I live in a rural hamlet in England's Westcountry. There is no public transport for 10 miles, so if you don't have a driving licence and vehicle you are stuck, there also being no shop or Post Office.
What does annoy me are people who have never bothered to learn to drive, and therefore never borne the cost of driving lessons or a vehicle, assume it is OK for them to regularly park their b***sides in other people's cars for lifts, and think they have a God-given right to do so. These people are completely unaware of the costs of motoring, rarely offer to contribute towards expenses, but are always cadging lifts. No, they are not stupid, but mug-drivers giving the lifts are.

David S
No why should they. I have an IQ of 135 and no driving license.

podge
Only some of the people who happen to be stupid and also have a driving licence.

Katie F
I'd rather date someone with a licence and car, but only because otherwise I end up driving all the bloody time!

Loads of my friends don't have a licence- most never bothered to learn to drive seeing as it's so expensive.

And big up to the grammar pedant- it is most certainly 'licence' as a noun, and 'license' as a verb. Don't know why they got so many thumbs down for stating that...

rrms
Sometimes it depends on the individual and why they never bothered. This day and age I would have thought that everyone drives

Nope. Many people choose to use the UK's (comparably) excellent public transport network instead.

I use Public Transport at the moment, as I've not yet passed my test, and i will probably continue to afterwards to save money (despite being £16/week, it's still cheaper then the car)

I wouldnt think so, I dont drive ~ never wanted to learn and I never use public transport unless I have to either ~ keeps me fit.
