They think we butcher the language. Maybe you should ask this question again in a few hours, because it's 4:30 AM there. |

My son in law is English and he is constantly making fun of how we talk. We laugh about the way we each say Squirrel. He says Squir-rel ( as in Squid) and we say Squer-ril (as in Square). Theres lots of other words that we say very differently. He always calls us "crazy Americans", but he wouldnt even consider going back to England. He's American now, he just wont admit it! We laugh about the boot and the bonnet (the trunk and the hood of the car), and he calls my back yard the "back garden" and there are NO flowers back there! Silly man! |

im from Chicago and i notice other American accents. I've been told i slip into Canadian, southern, and east coast accents sometimes. I get the canadian one from the hockey people i grew up around, i got the southern one from making fun of the southern accent (i sincerely appologize though) and i get the east coast from trying to confuse people....Silly midwesterner.
Most people tell me my accent is "Chicagoan with a hint of West Coast". |

we have accents even to each other.
Have you listened to how someone from the east coast like Boston or New York talk compared with someone from out west?
I'm always mispronouncing Washington and calling it Worshington.
So in essence we all have accents even to each other. |

we all have accents. Just look at the different accents in the US alone. You have the southern accent, the New Englander accent, the dutchy accents in places like Wisconsin, and on and on. The same can be said about England, where many can tell where in England you are from by your accent.
I would imagine that British and Australians take harmless pleasure in our accent, as we do theirs. |

My "mate" from Bolton likes to have a laugh over my accent from time to time (says I mispronounce his name, Stu as "Stoo", when he pronounces it as "Styoo". We also have a laugh over spelling differences such as humor vs. humour, color vs. colour, etc. All in fun. No hard feelings. |

I know Canadians think Americans have accents, so the answer must be yes. |

Sure Americans also believe we have accents I am a midwesterner and could barely understand some of the folks I met in the heart of Dixie |

Well im Scottish and most definately have an accent, personally i like american accents, with the exception of the complete redneck accents, as fot the american spelling its a bit strange at times but not a major problem. |

I think Americans sound strange - they have the accents, not us English people.
We have DIALECTS. |

Everyone has an accent. Some American accents are OK, but some sound annoying, a bit whiney. |

Well, Americans have some of the strongest accents. I like some accents but not others and am not very fond of the New York accent. I find it very guttaral. The same as here in the UK many regions have accents. But I must say I will always like the British accent (or non-accent RPP the best). |

It's not a case of believing Americans have accents - we KNOW Americans have accents - we all have accents - everyone in the whole world - which experts can recognise and define - although not all as good as proffessor Higgins in "My Fair Lady"

How do they feel about it?... What do you mean. I have no feelings for the British accent other then its funny to talk in that style, but feelings? Nah. |

The British find American accents appalling. As for Australian accents, I don't care for them, it's an unfortunate blend of cockney and Aussie developed around the time Aus was set up as a penal colony. as for British accents, I love them and I think they make anyone sound educated and refined. |
