Why dont you as an English person try to persuade your wifes relations of the common values and traditions your two countries have shared over the centuries.
If that does not work tell her to FCUK OFF!
You get nationalistic people in every country and speaking as a Scotsman who travels extensively throughout all of England for work I know how you feel about tension and resentment. Quite often I am greeted very warmly until my accent gives me away as being Scottish and sometimes the persons attitude can change immediately. What gets me more annoyed nowadays is the same thing can come from young muslim asians living in England and I think to myself WTF? |

You want Wales to become independent because you don't get on with your in-laws?
I think there would have to be a better reason that that. |

Wales has been around for centuries. It won't go away no matter how you feel. |

Of course we need Wales, any time I am feeling stressed out by the modern world and want to get away from it all for a while I go to Wales. I wouldn't be able to do that if we got rid of it. |

Of course we need Wales. Without it the ferry to Ireland would have nowhere to dock. |

I love the Welsh! They're great fun and always welcome in Scotland. Besides, we need them. Without the Welsh Mainland UK would just be known as England. ;) The Welsh are always there supporting Scotland in our banter with the English. And before anyone goes getting all excited, i'm speaking strictly tongue-in-cheek.... |

Perhaps your own unease makes you think the Welsh are not nice. Your own feelings about in-laws would be the same where-ever you were. |

Do we really need wales now, WHO'S WE, who exactly do you think you or WE are, QUESTION IS, is there really any need for YOU now, |

Try going to Scotland then...they are even more bitter about the English. I say cut em off, and let them run themselves. How will they pay all the benefits most of the populations are claiming then. |

Well yes we do need Wales. Without Wales we would not be the United Kingdom. And what other people have said about wales about their stupid language, well in secondary schools there you can learn up to 4 languages in the curriculum - Welsh, German, French and Spanish (Welsh and French compulsory)! |

It's not that we need Wales. Wales is part of the UK and has a wonderful culture, just like the other parts of the UK. I strongly believe that the UK would be the poorer if any part of it were to break away. |

Of course we need Wales - without Wales what would people in Liverpool and Birmingham drink, apart from booze? Hint: all their water comes from Wales. |

If they wish to go, let them. Goodness knows no one can read their bizarre language. |

You will find that a lot of "pureblood" Welsh people will have a grudge against English people as they see them as foreigners who have too many holiday homes. In touristy areas such as Llandudno or the Lleyn peninsula you will find the locals welcoming but in smaller villagers you will be made to feel like an intruder.
That's just the way it is! |
