Same here, since we moved from the town to the country we can leave the car unlocked and even go for a chat with the neighbours and leave the house doors open. |

Yes, and I think most people feel fine in our area, both male and female, but I'm not going to say where that area is. |

Ultimately that is a personal question. I guess it would depend on your age, fitness level, gender, whether it was a scary dark bit of countryside or a brightly lit well-populated city or town.
There are far too many factors involved to do justice to your question.
In the UK, the overall crime statistics are at the lowest ever, so there is not much chance of anything bad happening to you.
Even in Glasgow, which is the murder capital of Europe, and Scotland (which is the most violent country in the developed world), homicides tend to be committed by knife-wielding teenage relatives high on drink or drugs (apparently), so you would be perfectly safe out on your own!
However, and having said that, it is not the facts and figures that matter, it is the perception of risk, and the fact is that the newspapers and other media are doing a good job of spreading fear and distrust of the young. |

Not any more, thanks to the police doing paperwork when they should be patrolling the streets, and there are plans afoot to cut back on the police force and introduce more community policing, fat lot of use they are.
very interesting programme on TV, recently, three well known women, one a jounalist, the other two i think were MP's were given the remit to walk around in the evening in three seperate cities, London, Liverpool and Glasgow, at first with camera crew and then alone to see how safe they feel, and for the most part none felt safe at all. One had rocks thrown at her by a bunch of yobs, and one thought everything was ok until a car pulled up and she had a gun pointed at her. So i think that our streets are pretty unsafe. Perhaps in villages where more people know each other but in cities no i really don't think so. |

Absolutely not. I won't go walking outside my house after about 7pm when it's dark nights.

My hometown is ok, but the nearby city where we sometimes go for a night out seems to be crawling with drunken weirdos after dark. |

when i lived in Northampton, there were always some weirdos and chavs around and I was a bit cautious at night, but certainly didn't ever become housebound through fear.
Now I live in Wiltshire,nr salisbury, and feel pretty safe,as it's a low crime area, though in the dark there are so many bushes and of course you can't see if anyone's in them as its a country area and unlit. |

Having now moved to Cyprus, and feel extremely safe and comfortable here.....i can't say that I was ever exctly 'frightened' to walk the streets.......I can only say that perhaps if I was walking the dog late at night, i might have felt a little nervous, possibly intimidated if I found myself approaching a group of people....but more often than not we'd all pass each other without a second glance! |

Im not sure really.
somenights ill be fine walking back by myself (though i will not wear my headphones or anything just to be safe)
but then some nights i get terrified because , like right now, there are a massive groups of chavs outside my house, that are just hanging around, and somenights (like one a couple of weeks ago) i walked down this path n had to phone my boyfriend to talk to me while 2 really dodgy looking guys were coming towards me.
also someone killed himself in the park near me, and my friends got punched up to...
it sounds like a nasty neighbourhood, but its really not, just some nights are great and i feel ok, other times i have to get lifts everywhere cause i get too afraid. |

I feel very safe walking alone in my area,it's a lovely peaceful place with hardly any trouble, couldn't do much better to be honest-lots of people are moving here because it has a low crime rate and is a safe place to raise a family. |

yes im happy to go out alone at night. im on the south coast of england and ive never been worried about going out. i was out late in bournemouth recently and although its supposed to be the drinks capital of the south i didnt see any problems and i was in pubs and bars. taxi ranks etc . people should realise that although there are rapes and murders in the papers ,they are not the norm. |

'Er indoors!!

I feel totally safe where I live, and we don't even have street lights. |

I wouldn't say I'm frightened to stir outside my house but I don't feel completely safe when I'm alone at night in the town. Saying that, fear of crime doesn't really limit me in my life.
The sad thing is we are right to be cautious. Crime is a fact. If you live in a city you should not put yourself at risk unnecessarily. You wouldn't leave your house unlocked all night. Why not take the same care of yourself and avoid walking alone in bad areas with high crime?
It's just common sense. |

Yes now that i carry a gun, only joking! Its not advisable in any area, especially if you are a female! |
