Great answers, lovely places, here are two of my my favourites.

And in France this one is truly magnifique. The double spiral staircase, said to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci, is truly spectacular.

I absolutely love castles, Aurora!! My favourites are Bodium and Hever, both in great locations and not too far from where I live.

Goodness, I have lost count of the castles that I have been to. I was lucky enough to live in Cyprus as a child and I think that that is where my love of castles stems from. I would have to say that my most favourite castle is St, Hilarion which is in the Kyrenia Mountains of Northern Cyprus

Here in the UK, I too love Pembroke Castle and have been many times. Dover Castle with it's secret wartime chambers is another favourite, as is Leeds Castle.

Wow, so many great places that I have to copy some names for my next visit!

I visited a few castles, some ruins (which I find fascinating)
I enjoyed Leeds castle and grounds, very lovely. I was most impressed by the Tower of London, so much history.

I love going to visit such places.... the problem is, most people my age prefer clubs and shopping....

My favourite is Richmond Castle in York. went there for a school trip and been several times since. Back home in the North-East there are so many places to see of historical value.

Castle Eden Walkway and Robin Hood's Bay both feature ruins, which is another favourite of mine. I guess I love visiting ruins as your imagination builds what these fabulous place must have been like.

Most impressive of all was an enormous Fort on the island of Malta. I was hungover on the tour so I would have to look up it's names and details, but it was breathtaking in its expanse and views.

I love castles and have visited many, I prefer the ruined ones that have seen some action!

Wales probably has the best castles:

http://www.castlewales.com/

I used to live near Pembroke Castle which is awesome, huge and well preserved. Carreg Cennan is in an awesome location. Manobier Castle is quite small but overlooks a lovely beach, great for day trips.

North Wales has Beaumaris Castle and Caenarfon Castles, both very impressive.

Cornwall has some good ones, Launceston Castle and Restormel Castles.

Scotland also has good castles, Culzean Castle is interesting as it is triangular. Stirling Castle is very large and well preserved, worth a visit.

I'd probably go for Urquhart Castle as my favourite overall as the location is stunning with Loch Ness on one side and the mountains on the other.

I love Glamis castle in Scotland - where the Queen Mother was brought up. It has lots of great stories, ghosts etc. I also like Catle Fraser in Aberdeenshire, very old and once went to a ceilidh (Scottish dance) in the Grand Hall there which was fabulous and the evening ended with a bagpiper playing a lament on the ramparts as we left!

Haz
Well I did until Mummy Haz managed to insult a recently bereaved Duchess of Devonshire!

I know you know the story so I won't bore you again....

Chatsworth is definitely my fave. I like the idea of it being built by a woman :-) I dunno it just feels like Narnia and it's got that painted violin that looks real.

I also adore Stokesay castle. It's an English heritage site and they don't tart things up and put dummies in and I like that. Everytime I've been it's been full of Swallows ..just adding to the magic.

When I researched Mr Haz's family tree I knew he was bit posh but I was well peed off when I found out he was a direct descendant of Bess of Hardwick the lady responsible for Chatsworth. Reliably Mummy Haz made me feel a lot better by saying' that's all very well but where's the bleedin' money?' lololol.

It's safe to say I come from a long and noble line of **** shovelers ;-)

What a great question!

My favourite has to Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland. Magical and so beautiful. It was a ruin until a few years ago and has been re built to it's former glory. Highlander was filmed here too.

In our area I love Burton Agnes and Castle Howard...My Dad worked on Castle Howard a few years ago and got me a tour of the house, including the back areas where the Howard family live.
