You need some sort of photographic id. DVLA licence may do but your passport is best and most accepted.

No but you do need an acceptable form of photographic ID. Passport, drivers license or an up-to-date work ID card (only accepted by some carriers).

Problem is... there's still no national ID card in the UK and look, not everyone drives. Besides, the government doesn't even issue optional alternative IDs for non-drivers. You'd have to present some random, unofficial card with your photo on it, and it's up to them to take you and your photo on trust.

So, if you don't drive, then YES, get a passport to be on the safe side. It's the only way you can conclusively and officially prove your identity... unless you fetch your birth certificate, of course.

My understand is that you need a passport to fly anywhere effective Jan 1 2007. But the best thing you can do is call your travel agent or airport and they can help you out.

You deffinatly need a photo I.D, but check with the airline if you do or don't so you dont end up not being able to travel.

No you don't. We just came back from Glasgow to Manchester. And as for countries in the EU, Although the UK is a full member of the EU you will still be required to carry a full 10 year passport that is current for the duration of your stay in Europe. Most countries have abandoned passport checks at land borders but you will still be expected to produce a valid form of identification. For UK citizens the only document which suffices is a British passport. Furthermore you will have your passport checked by immigration control when you return to the UK.

Most airlines state photographic ID, Drivers licence etc should suffice, to be honest, I would always take my passport, if some jobsworth starts being funny at check-in, your'e screwed.
