Do you think Londoners are rude?

When I meet Londeners here in New Zealand they say how nice & polite people are to strangers & in London it's the opposite. But when I was in London 10 years ago as a tourist I would get lost & ask for directions from everyone from a thuggish looking Eastender to a posh accented toff type, yet all of them were so helpful & polite & kind. The only rudeness was one guy who served me in a food outlet & the customs officer who appeared to be trying to deport me on arrival with no reason (he was trying to say I was there to work illegally, but I wasn't & there was no evidence of that so he had to let me in - ridiculous as I could prove my main destination were other parts of Europe as I had a Eurail pass for 3 months which you can't even use in the UK.

I was also surprised when an elderly lady in KFC (hey bad food but I was on a budget ok?) entrusted me to mind her bag while she went to the toilet (I guess I should've been thinking uh oh, she might be IRA as they were still into bombing London back then!). I couldn't figure out why she couldn't take her bag with her & why she asked a complete stranger in London something like that without worrying I'd run off with it. She didn't seem senile either. Weird.

I also found Parisians polite in Paris & if they spoke English they didn't pretend they couldn't so I don't know why people always say Parisians are rude. I did get some negativity when it was found out I was from NZ as they bombed the Greenpeace boat in our harbour & thought they were justified & they felt threatened by farming subsidies at that time.

Also found New Yorkers polite too. Go figure.

It's just like in any other country really! Wherever you go, there will be some lovely polite people, and some others who aren't quite so nice. It's just how you've been raised I guess =)

im a londoner (eastender) and im polite
its just how people are raised
some people aren't taught any manners and some are

Only some people will ruin it for others.

Truth is that we are all polite and helpful to complete strangers. However, as a Londoner I know perfectly well that another Londoner can give me an earful if the mood takes.

What we do mostly here in London is say, "sorry" if we bump into someone or even if they bump into us.

It's a crowded city so we have to have rules about looking out for each other.

As for the French in general, I've always found them helpful - I expect they're just glad not to be Germans, but as we Brits live on a bunch of islands, we tend on the whole to think that everyone is foreign, a potential terrorist, or worse. No, it's not that bad honest. Even streetwise Londoners like to smile occasionally, but not too often.

Londoners are polite to foreigners, not to each other :)

and the french are just rude full stop

Londoners can be rude - ones on foot, on the trains, on the Underground and on buses, but this is mainly because they kind of go into their own world where they are just trying to make a beeline to wherever it is that they have to get to, and if anybody stops them from doing this they become rude and irritated. That's my dad's theory anyway :P

A lot can change in 10 years. We are very rude, bitterly and its a cold place to be socially. I find New Zealanders to be so naturally warm and sweet Im always glad to meet one. But that does not mean that you wont run into nice people because there are a few around. You have to remember though that London is a very stressful place because of all the different cultures and things like money.

Penfold
I find Londoners to be polite and courteous to those who are obviously foreigner travellers and those who are obviously in a spot of difficulty. They just merely appear rude and discourteous. Of course, you do get those who are genuinely rude but as a generalisation, Londoners are a good bunch of people.

We're only rude BACK to rude people. Remember, contempt breeds contempt......!

I don't think London's much different from anywhere else, people very pleasant and polite through to downright aggressive but most people somewhere to the 'pleasant' side of the middle.

Having just said that most places are the same.....
the Republic of Ireland's different - never once had anyone be anything but friendly and helpful over there.
