No, I tried to pull off an English accent and I made myself laugh. I sounded really stupid. |

Johnny Depp - best ever, Gwnneth Paltrow perfectly decent in sliding doors and Emma, Mike Myers (OK not American and not an English accent, but superb Scottish one).
By the way: Best ever comedy British Isles accents: both Irish - step forward, RIchard Gere and Brad Pitt!, you win |

I think anyone who has the talent of doing voices and the like could put on any accent, I can't think of an american who I have heard doing a British accent of the top of my head but look at Kevin Kline in French Kiss, his French accent was excellent! |

But someone in an area for a period of time they are going to start talking that way. |

You can try, but you'll never be able to fool a native speaker with someone trying to mimic the language. This is one of the CIA's biggest problems. How do you get people to infiltrate a group of natives when your operatives don't speak the local patois? |

Renee Zelleweger did it very well as Bridget Jones as did Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding Doors |
|

I should be doing something else
|
Yeah, as a few people have mentioned, Renee Zelwegger did a good job of it, and also Mike Myers in Austin Powers, I think he did a pretty good job of both the English and Scottish accents. |

Without professional vocal training, it'd be difficult to carry off a perfect accent without some shibboleths (little indications of origin). Most actors have voice training to learn the phonetic differences in accents, and if the scripts are written by British people, then the vocabulary would be similar too. |

Marion,

Yes Love Johnny Depps in Sweeney Todd, But dont get me started on Kevin Costnor in Robin Hood or Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins what a disaster |

No I think it would be impossible because unless you have an accurate script to follow, you will miss out on the grammar.
The same goes for Welsh, Cornish, Manx, Scottish, Irish and indeed any of the British regional accents and dialects. |

I agree with others.
Rene Zellweger (alias Bridget Jones) is the only one I've heard who comes close. |
