Does Britain mean England?

I'm an American that's in love with England, although I've never studied the geography and all the history of it.

Well, my questions are:
Does Britain = England?
or Does Britain = the United Kingdom?
And is the United Kingdom just England? Or is Scotland, Ireland, and perhaps some other countries included?

If you can answer all these questions, that'd be lovely.

Helpful responses only, please!

Britain does not equal either England or the UK. England is a constituent country of both the UK & Great Britain.

UK = England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland
GB = England, Scotland & Wales.

Hope this helps

Britain = England, Scotland &Wales
United Kingdom = England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland and Ireland (the republic of) are two different countries.
Ireland itself has nothing to do with the UK or Britain.

Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales (not Northern Ireland as one poster stated).
The United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the islands i.e. Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man etc. (not Eire as one poster stated).

Great Britain is the biggest Island of the British Isles, incorporating England, Scotland, and Wales.

The Country is The U.K. and that includes all the Islands ( of which there are many small ones like Jersey and The Orkney's) and Northern Ireland.

The British Isles includes Southern Ireland, (Eire) but that is a separate country.

Petero is not correct. Eire is part of the British Isles, it is a separate country, but geographically it is part of the British Isles. The same as Canada is part of America, but not part of the United States. People get confused between geographical and Nation States.

Southern Ireland (Eire) is not part of the United Kingdom.

Adacadus
GB (Great Britain)=England+Wales+Scotland
UK (United Kingdom)=GB+NI (Northern Ireland)
RoI (Republic of Ireland AKA Eire) Geographically south of NI, but politically seperate.

**Great Britain is England, Scottland and Wales**

(there are other minor islands thrown in for fun as well lol, such as the Isle of Wight, Anglesey, the Isles of Scilly, the Hebrides, and the island groups of Orkney and Shetland, but does not include other outlying islands such as the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.)

**The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the above mentioned, plus Northern Ireland.**

(The UK has fourteen overseas territories, all remnants of the British Empire, which include Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn Islands, Saint Helena (including Ascension, Tristan da Cunha) , South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia & Turks and Caicos Islands.)

Britain is made up of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
England is it's own separate country.
Since I'm not from England, I'm not sure about the "United Kingdom" bit.
but if I had to guess, I'd think it was the same name.
Like "America" and the "United States"

Nathan
Kind of. Great Britain is the are that is England, Scotland, Wales, Norhtern Ireland, and any other Birtish territories. Its the name of the somewhat empire of Britain, Usually when people say britain though they refer to England.

- "And is the United Kingdom just England?"

Think about it for one moment. How can you "unite" something with just one thing? Unite means combine. You need two or more to be united. Is the United States just New York? Can New York unite with itself?

So, no! United Kingdom is certainly not just England!

England = England. That is all. Why would it have other names? It already has one. One is enough. Other names means other things.

To say England equals those other things as you have mentioned is considered offensive, insulting, ignorant etc. Use at your own risk!

--
Great Britain (or Britain) is the name of an island. That island is home to Wales, Scotland and England. Three very distinct and different nations.

Furthermore, the term Britain comes from Brython and refered to native Celtic (Welsh) people - the original inhabitants of the British island - so nothing really to do with England at all.

--
Hope that helps.

Technically, the entire british isle makes up Britain, including England, Wales, Scotland, etc. but often "Britain" refers incorrectly to England specifically. The United Kingdom includes The British Isle and Northern Ireland. so Basically, United Kingdom> Britain> England, but only the last refers specifically to the england you are thinking of.
