Does anybody actually enjoy living in England?

I hear all these complaints from all you Englishmen (and women) about living in England and how everyone wants to leave. I was in the U.S. Navy in the mid '90s and we ported in England several times... I freakin' loved it. I loved England so much that I got my undergraduate degrees in literature and European history (focusing on British Literature & British History) and my Master's Degree in British Literature. My wife and I are thinking of moving to Jolly Ole England for a year or two to enjoy working & living in a place that many Americans find quite romantic and cultured. I realize that you (in the broad sense of the word) have an issue with immigration, foreigners, taxes, and a myriad number of other British topics regarding the Isles. I also realize that any place you go, especially to a foreign country, you will have to make certain sacrifices and take the bad with the good; my question to you is this: Does anybody actually enjoy living in England, and why? Open to all, including American expats.

Yes I do enjoy living in England. I was born & bred in North East Lancashire near the Pennines. I now live in North West Lancashire, nearer the coast. I love both areas and do miss the hills. I also love to holiday abroad.
I would holiday in the UK more but it costs more than going where we can get guaranteed sun & warmth for two weeks.
You can't bet the lovely green fields and hedges in the UK. It is just the people who have spoilt a wonderful land.

England is a great place to live, we just like moaning.

the country is fine mate its the immigrants that come into it to sponge off the state that pi** me off caue all they are doing is draining the economy.

England is rich in culture, history, has large cities and also beautiful countryside, fells, and lakes, we have a fantastic coast line, again varied from craggy cliffs, to shady nooks and coves, the people are truly european, which enriches our culture further, in the main cities you are never far away from chinese, indian, italian, french, thai, etc restaurants, The people are diverse, friendly and warm all over the country the different dialects are fantastic, we have some great art galleries, country houses, churches, historical architecture, museums, there really is something for everyone. The down side is that these days there are a lot of scroungers, that just come here to see what they can get, don't work, use all of our resources on the NHS , perpetrate crime, rob, steal and cheat the systems, but the only people to blame for this are the english people and the government for letting it happen.

Moaning about life in Britain is just a traditional passtime. I've lived here for many years and the reason I love it is because of the people. Brits don't take themselves too seriously and I love that. People keep each other from getting too big-headed and see the funny side of most things. You can't beat the sense of humour of the English, the Scots, the Welsh and the Irish. All are very funny, and take great joy in teasing each other. They call it "taking the piss". What a great British expression, eh?

I LOVE England with all my heart. Yes, we complain, but at times doesn't everyone.

It is lush and green (thanks to all our 'rain'), it is beautiful and it is home.

I would NEVER even contemplate leaving England....... even if our summer is pretty none existant.

:)

:(
have been there, and really liked it , very beautiful country.

You have to clarify if you mean England specifically or the UK as a whole. A classic U.S. mistake if you don't mind me saying.

I think the UK is fine on the whole. With pockets of near-third-world depravity, but much like in the U.S, only small pockets... a lot of people can go their whole life living in areas that are alright.

Unfortunately there are an ever-increasing number of people in the UK with very small minds who insist that immigration has caused us great problems, when in fact if it wasn't for the recent influx of good East European workers in particular, many of our industries would be struggling.

Beware of borderline white-nationalists in denial.

Yes! Love it here - wouldn't live anywhere else!

I think it has the perfect mix of shops and city life and the good old countryside, even if there is a tad bit too much rain!

Hi,
Its diffrent living in a place than staying, or visiting as a tourisit- that goes for anywhere in the world.

Do i enjoy living in England- as a country yes. But there is alot of things i dont like about this country and i feel that the goverment is responcible- but we the people do nothing about it- except moan about the latest 'media topic' and we will move on to the next topical moan.
I think ive only seen one example recently of people banding together to protest - and that was truck drivers over fuel costs and before that there was a protest of motorcyclists.
It appears to me that the goverment can throw anything at the people of England and we will moan but continue to suck it up. ( getting off my soap box now !)

Myself as an individual i feel powerless to make a diffrence to the things i think are wrong and my vote is worthless as no party is there for the benefit of the country.

So if i could i would live and work in Europe and visit England.

The One
I was born and bread here and would never move any where else I live very close to London which as so much history. You mentioned why you think many English want to leave there castle and you are bang on I'm afraid.Any way thanks for your comments on your visit good luck with your visit.

I think as a nation we are moaners, perhaps that's a good thing because complaining about something sometimes changes it for the better. The Australians nicknamed us 'Whinging Poms' years ago so we have always been the same. I have travelled to many places around the world and I have to say taking everything into account England (the UK as a whole as well) is probably the best place to live. Maybe that is because it is familiar to me but I truly believe it. We must fight to change what is bad and there are lots of things that are but be thankful for what is good. I think UK is beautiful as well, I always notice when I return from abroad how green and pretty it looks.

[Stephanie...Yeah?]â„¢
Its alright
i used to love it but the goverment actually make me think what are you doing to this country?
Englands fine.. its just some of the people that run it that arnet haha.

But I still would love to travel but Im just too curious, not because im trying to run away from this country.

I love it. I love the variety of the language, I love the history, I love the absolute mishmash of other cultures that sit alongside our own.

I count myself so lucky that I can hop on a train any Saturday I want and head for a picnic in Hyde Park amidst world famous sites that seem cosy and familiar.

We say the weather is terrible and we're not lying but we wouldn't have it any other way because it always gets a conversation started.

I love the way we queue and the way strangers rally together like old friends when someone queue jumps.

I love that no matter wher you are in England, the fish and chip shop chips always taste the same.

I love our optimism when it comes to summer, coupled with sterling stubbornness. It's raining? Let's put up the badminton set anyway! It's cold and windy? We'll go to the beach in macs and jumpers!

I even love to hear people take the mick out of British accents because they nearly always get it so, so wrong.

It makes me happy to think that some people travel the world to holiday in the city I call home.

I live in the north of England and I love it. Even if the weather can be crappy, but on a nice day there is nowhere else I'd like to be. Newcastle is a great city (and the geordie accent is hilarious too). The old buildings are beautiful, and so are the new - especially buildings like the sage etc. The countryside is wonderful, particularly from the top of blencathra in the Lakes. I am still in education, and I can say that they do a good job. The music service in Gateshead is excellent - which is great for me as I enjoy playing instruments and such. Also England is good for health care...especially when compared to what I've heard about the U.S. Admittedly England has its problems, but there are lots of great things about it too.

i love it here its great coz theres barely any crime and it usualy has bad weather but thats a good thing lol

flubster666
Love it and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. This is a BRILLIANT country.

Pedestal42
Yes. But we also enjoy moaning... (World champion: Nigel Mansell)

It's traditional.

WW1: An American officer feared a collapse of British morale, as when he told some English soldiers that the Germans badly wanted the shelled quagmire they were holding, a voice called out "They're bloody welcome to it."

I've in my time visited, and considered, New Zealand, Australia, France, Canada and the USA. But for all their positive features, England's home.
I'm fine here, but admittedly I've found myself a nice spot.
(Lots of lovely rain to moan about, up on the edge of Bodmin Moor).

You will have to protect your Family & Property from racist Chavs, if you have an American accent you will be harassed and called a 'fookin Yank'. You cant have a gun, if you try to stop these idiots and lay a finger on them the Police will arrest you for assault, especially if you are a white foreigner. Foreigners and English alike only like this country if they earn a lot and have holiday house elsewhere, for the NHS, milking the social security system and because they're unable to live anywhere else, or because their country is even worse. Also, you didnt mention your race which is an important factor.

I love England.

Over the last few days, I've asked a few questions about why people hate England so much- like, for example, when did people like the country's Prime Minister. Turns out no-one can answer that sort of question- they have no solution to any of the problems; they just like to whinge about anything and everything.

In my opinion, the people on this site aren't representatives of England.

I LOVE IT. We have such a varied culture, i'm friends with loads of people from different backgrounds. We do seem to allow a lot of immigrants in, but they do the jobs they can't get us to do - so its kind of a win-win situation.

The weather is pretty good. It may rain a lot, but who cares! I've a good set of waterproofs, so i can go out in ALL WEATHERS.

The Government's not that bad either. Without them i'd have no income - thanks to them i get £30 a week, just for going to college.

I have a good life, and even though i don't have a car, I can get everywhere i want to go, by bus or by train.

I can't ever think of living anywhere else - i love it too much here in the North East - with some of the lovliest people in the world!!!!!

I do love living in england because i think it has everything - it has beaches, canals, rivers, london, history, modern towns, cottages, hills, mountains, lakes, countryside, and we do get SOME sunshine, and when we do, it is really beautiful!
i think its a shame some people go on about the rain because there is so much more to it and i think that its also unfair to bring up any little problems like chavs
I LOVE ENGLAND

Tony
the times in the morning, earl grey at four, the sound of willow against leather, giving ol' johnny foreigner a run for his shilling at lord's!!
