Drinking age going up to 21? UK?

I've heard that the drinking age in the UK could possibly go up to 21 in april, this year or next, i'm not sure.
is there any truth in this?
i really hope not =S

Wave, i couldn't agree with you more that kids needs more things to do nowadays,
but not with you and some others about raising the drinking age being a good idea, hell we managed to get our hands on drinks at 13 when the legal age is 18, would a couple more years have stopped us? no. we would still have found a way to get some cider and get drunk down the park. again, it goes back too kids needing more things to do, i always did it out of pure boredom...

anyway, thanks to all who answered

There's been no change in the legal drinking age as of yet. It's still 18 and there are no official proposals to raise it.

There have been calls from various bodies for the legal age to be raised to 21. The Scottish Government has been conducting a consultation and a pilot scheme which could - in theory - see the age limit for off-licence sales of alcohol in Scotland raised to 21. However, that's as far as it has gone at present.

Individual pubs and off licences, etc. are allowed to set their own age limits, though (as long as it's 18 or above). That's always been the case.

Probably a good idea, the binge drinking in this country is a serious problem and its occurs probably because its part of our culture that getting wasted or drunk is cool and almost spiritual. There are too many 13 year olds in parks getting drunk (hell i was one of them) stricter laws may help. But really kids need greater entertainment and things to do and keep them busy and feel good and positive.

Though i might suggest putting it up to 20 rather than 21.

In our local tesco they want proof of i.d. if you look under 25!!!!!! Okay for me, I`m way older than that but i feel sorry for you if you`re in your early 20`s..

timesharehead

It will be completely banned in the next 15-20 years as well as smoking. Time to start making home brew.

Voltosonic
I'll be forked off if it does.
Just before my 16th, the smoking age went up to 18.

i don't know
i hope not :S
i agree we do need more to do life's boring unless you got a drink lol
i also agree i don't see how by raising the age is going to make any difference its not like we walk in there and buy it we'll still find someone to get it if 11-12 year old can get it now then even if they cant i bet 15-16 Year old still will its not going to solve the problem

Angel of Music
Thats stupid!!! I'm 16, and never going to be able to drink! Ah well I'm going to get someone who can buy it to get it me!

James L
im sure its not true,
but if it is... the 18 years old law doesnt really work anyway!

David S
Unfortunately not as the big breweries donate so much to the two major political parties. Its much more likely to go down to 14 knowing Bonkers Britain

sunz2k8
yep its true

it should be, 21 is the right age to decide what to do, check online probably newspapers.

I hope not too, but Ive not heard this before so I doubt it, but anyone under 21 can be asked to produce id on purchasing alchohol.
