Most street performers are first class and you can decide yourself the amount you wish to reward them with.

The Tatoo is the feather in the cap but there are to many shows to single any particular one out. If you're planning a vist try venue 33 at the Pleasance - lots of bars and shows in 1 location. It's an ideal place to spend many a night due to the variety of shows on offer.

My friend is always getting me tickets to see Ladyboys of Bangkok, and we are also going to see Circus of Horrors this year too!

Edinburgh Festival
There is not one Edinburgh Festival but those using the term are usually referring to the collection of various festivals in August and early September of each year in Edinburgh, Scotland:

Edinburgh International Festival - The original and "official" festival consisting of classical and contemporary Theatre, Opera, Music and Dance.
Edinburgh Fringe - Started life as a small scale "fringe" event to the EIF, but is now the largest of all the festivals and indeed the largest arts festival in the world [1]. Includes Theatre, Comedy, Music, Musicals, Dance and Children's shows.
Free Fringe - Edinburgh's 'Free Fringe' Festival
Edinburgh International Film Festival
Edinburgh International Book Festival
Edinburgh Military Tattoo
Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival
Edinburgh International Television Festival
Edinburgh Interactive Entertainment Festival
Edinburgh People's Festival
Edinburgh Mela
Edinburgh Art Festival
Edinburgh Annuale - contemporary art
Festival of Politics
Edinburgh International Internet Festival 1999 - 2006
iFest - the Internet Festival and Conference
Other festivals that take place in Edinburgh during the rest of the year include:

Ceilidh Culture - annual, in March and April [2]
The Edinburgh International Science Festival, annual, in April
OneEighty, the Science Festival 'fringe', new in 2006
Edinburgh Easter Festival - annual [3]
Beltane Fire Festival - annual on 1 May May Day
Dark City Festival, a goth music festival, annual in May
Children's International Theatre Festival - annual, in late May [4]
Meadows Festival - usually held in June, 2006's Festival was cancelled due to rising costs [2]
Leith Festival - annual, in June [5]
Edinburgh International Harp Festival - annual, in March/April [6]
Scottish International Storytelling Festival - annual, in October and November [7]
The exceptionally large Hogmanay celebrations

Without any doubt at all The Military Tattoo.
The rest of the Festival is ok for those who want to go to theatre shows but the street entertainers are often very good.
Thousands go there, so if you are not a local, get booked in asap!

I saw Rowan Atkinson in the George Square Theatre many years ago. It was a brilliant show :-)

I went to see Lee Evans in the festival I beleive it was around 95-96. I was the funniest show I had ever seen at the time. As for the street performers there are so many that come each years and put on great entertainment it is hard to choose. Either way if anyone decides they want to go during August for the festival you need to book a hotel room extremely early in the year. I used to work at the Forth Bridges Hotel just outside Edinburgh and all throughout august we used to get people walking in asking if there was any rooms left and when told no they would say do you know any hotels with rooms and I would be like NO its festival month. As for unusual things there are too many to choose from, there have been times the Jim Rose Circus have done stuff and that is sick/unusual/wierd stuff they do.

(obviously the lady boys are not a hit with some! minus rating...tut tut!)

OK...some one out there doesn't seem to like the Edinburgh Festival...minus rating given on most answers...perhaps you should visit the festival!
