As I understand it: Great Britain can't be a country.
The basis of any recognised country is that there are certain 'institutions', like an official and accepted law, an accepted religion, an education system, etc.
There IS an English & Welsh law.
There IS a Scottish law.
There is NO British law.
There IS a church of Scotland
There IS a church of England (and Wales I think).
There is NO church of Britain.
Scotland HAS an education system.
England & Wales HAS an education system.
There is NO British education system.
Britain CAN'T be a country, can it?
The UK is a union of countries. |

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to give it its full name, is a country. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are constituent countries. They used to be independent countries, or in Northern Ireland's case, part of an independent country, but are now part of a union. They are now a bit like states, but they have they do not have much power. Great Britain is the name of the largest island in the British Isles. This is the island that contains England, Scotland and Wales. The "great" is not because we are great, it was to distinguish us from what was called lesser Britain, which is modern day Brittany in France. Britain is an acceptable shortened name for the entire UK, not just Great Britain. I know that this is not one word, but it is the only way I can explain it. |

You can't sum it up in one word.
Great Britain is an Island which consists of England, Wales and Scotland. Together with N. Ireland, it makes up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. (Or the UK) |

Uk is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is all those without any part of Ireland, North or South. Sorry but one word was an impossibility. |

England, Scotland and Wales are no longer countries in their own right, they are former countries.
GB is made up of England, Scotland and Wales. It is a former country too.
UK is short for 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' It is a country.
At least that's my understanding |
