Some of my best friends are Irish. I have often stayed in a town which is predominately Catholic in Ireland, and despite the fact that I am an English protestant, I have never been anything except welcomed with open arms. So although people may have opinions about whether Northern Ireland should be part of the Republic, or the UK, most people don't let this cloud their judgement towards individuals. |

I am from London but my mother is Irish. I have been to Ireland many times, and to many parts of Ireland. People there do not know that I have Irish blood in me unless I tell them, yet I have never had anyone say anything rude to me because of my accent or nationality. I can honestly say that people in Ireland are among the friendliest in the world and all my friends who have been there say the same about them. |

I don't really have an opinion on the Irish as a whole. They have a beautiful country, put that's my only thought on the issue. If the Irish want to hate me for being English that's their problem.
[EDIT] Agree with above, the music is beautiful also. |

I am Northern Irish and have no grudge whatsoever towards the English.
Some people have upset towards the lack of British help during the Famine but I competely realise this was the British government of the Victorian age, and the English people today hold no account for this. |

No they don't.
I'm 1/2 Irish, 1/2 English and I'm welcomed in both England and Ireland.
Yes, you may get a few from both countries who hold a grudge, but to be honest, that is pointless, immature and childish. |

People are free to bear whatever grudges they like. Personally, i don't bear a grudge to anyone from anywhere. Hate takes too much time and effort and can consume you. I treat everyone how i would expect to be treated myself. I acknowledge the turbulent history between the two countries but considering that i wasn't around during the famine or Oliver Cromwell i don't feel responsible for any wrong doing on behalf of my countrymen in the past.
I'm English, and every Irishman i have got to know i have got on with very well. When the Irish are nice they are possibly the most hospitable people on the planet, just don't get on the wrong side of them! |

I am irish, and the hatred seems to stem from the Famine. In many peoples eyes, there was no famine. It was rather a case that the British came and took over houses and land and increased the rent 10 fold, thus making it ridiculously hard for Irish people to live. this led to many families being evicted and having no money.
more recently, many people hate 'the brits' because of their occupation of northern Ireland. this hatred comes mainly from the catholic nationalists who are occupied by the british, whereas the protestant unionists want to remain part of the United kingdom |

We've both had our history, i bare a little grudge on the IRA for blowing up a hospital in Manchester. And sometimes feel a Little angry with Irish for not getting a grip, and to stop fighting over religion. But I'd rather drink with an Irish man then some islamic nut case. We've got to remember we all celtic at Heart, England used to be celtic along with Scotland and Wales. As a English man i feel prouder to see the Union Jack then the st Gorges flag, it shows that we stick together. We defend each other. And we are civilized enough to stick together instead of fighting over territory. If Ireland don't want to be part of the UK its fine, there choice. But i think they need to move on instead of saying 'english bastard' every time the see one. I just hope we can depend on each other when we need help the most, which i feel will be pretty soon |

They can come round and we will do irish dancing and drink guiness and eat potatoes and drink tea and eat scones.
And be happy and united in our little kingdom.:) |

I don't have a problem with the Irish. If any Irishman has a problem with me for being English then that's their prerogative. I'm not going to insult the nation or the people of Ireland in some childish game of point-scoring.
The 'troubles' in Northern Ireland and the IRA terrorist attacks on innocent English citizens are most likely the causes of any ill-feeling.
I'm not going to tar all Irish with the same brush. As long as they don't have a problem with me and where i come from, i'm not going to have any problems with them. |

I'm not English, I'm Welsh and I think the world of our Celtic cousins. We were given a very warm welcome in Ireland, especially when they realised we were Welsh, not English.
Why the thumb-down?...It's true, they were wonderful. |

English were mean to the irish and the scottish, however they're on good terms now because:
1) lots of them are half half and not pure english.
2) they're busy fighting the muslims terrorists now. |

Obviously they remember the atrocities of the IRA towards the British in last fifty years. Its hard to forget. Still the English treat the Irish well.
Ben H next to me makes my point clearly.
The fact remains I answered your question fully and simply that no one can dispute. Now you are getting stressed over how many history books I have written! |

You just need to look at history and you will find an answer . The Tudor conquest of Ireland plus the performance of Cromwell hardly set the seeds of understanding. The Plantation of Ulster ( including settlement by Lowland Scots ) excacerbated things and the removal of the traditional Gaelic ruling families was inexcusable .
And I am not Irish . |
