Sorry, we don't speak English. We speak American, a derivative of English. Even the British don't speak "English" anymore. The language is constantly growing and changing. Original English was changed several times quite drastically. Check out Shakespeare's plays if you are not sure. There is NO way a language could always stay the same. New words are constantly added and old words are dropped. We change it every day we speak. The two languages are comparible, but they are not the same. |

How stupid can you get exactly? there's an American English and an English, English was invented WAY before "English" was spoken in America because America, if you ask the native Americans they'll also tell you, was invaded by English people (well I think mostly Irish and that's where the mistakes came from.) Try looking in a history book for once deary!! |

The Americans invented English did they????
OK, let me just go and re-write history..............
Right then, English was actually derived mostly from Latin actually, your American-English isn't English-English is it? That's why we say it's an Americanism, do you get Englishisms? No you don't! It can't be an Englishism as WE invented the English language.
Now, I'm off to eat some ******* chips and peas! |

Terminology.
There's Canadian English.
There's probably Australian English.
And I agree with all those who say English came from England originally! |

This is the second time i have seen a similar question written by a ignorant yank, I use the word Ignorant in the literal English dictionary sense. Just because they teach English in American schools does not mean that they speak English. surely a knowledge of their history would tell them (a) that the founding Fathers came from England and spoke English and(b) that America was a colony of England at one time. If this is an indication of just how much the yanks know about the world and its own history then there is little wonder that a large section of the world has no time for the US or its policies, no doubt the writer of this question is one of those Americans who are under the impression that England is one of the states on the east coast of America, Another American has a question asking why England has its own parliament when it lost the independence war and became an American State. Blair sucks up to these people the sooner he goes the better. |

You 'invented' English? English. The language from England. Spoken in England before the United States existed. YOU invented it?
And as far as Brits are concerned there's no such thing as British English. British English IS English. There is, however, an English called American English, spoken by Americans.
Are you thick or just plain ignorant? |

English owes much of its self to a West-Germanic Language. Anglo-Frisian language was brought to Britain in the 5th Century AD by Germanic settlers from various parts of northwest Germany. The original Old English language was subsequently influenced by two successive waves of invasion. The first was by speakers of languages in the Scandinavian branch of the Germanic family, who colonised parts of Britain in the 8th and 9th centuries. The second wave was of the Normans in the 11th century, who spoke Norman (an oïl language closely related to French). Modern language is progressive and it gets richer the more it borrows from other sources but we should try and protect and honour its origins a little i feel B4 U & I ALL START 2 TALK & RI8HT LIKE THIS!
Amercia now seems intent to claim English as theirs. Buy any software package made by an American company and you will note that you have to select "American English" as a language type or see any war film and the facts are twisted and badly abused (U571 - need i say more).
The question itself isn't stupid - just misinformed - you like alot of Americans and Winston Smith are living in Dystopia in 1984 when the clock strikes 13!
