Fascination with Manchester am I weird? |
How could one city throw up such engimatic music, and culture?
It's like a mecca. To this day I'm absolutely fascinated with the city and other parts of the nort/north-west. It seems so mysterious to a southerner. Am I weird?? How do you mancunians feel about it?
Does it have a special vibe? Additional Details I mean to say, even when I was up there, there is some mystique in that city that is quite simply awesome. I just wonder who dwells there. |

I'm from the south, but spend half my life in Manchester due to work.
I'm of the same opinion,I love the place. The people are so much friendlier, the shopping is far better than some hole like London, and the nightlife is far superior.I'd be quite happy to live their full-time. |

Manchester and Mancunians come in for a lot of flack, but it's a great place to live for many reasons, not least the friendliness of the people. The NW is indeed a top area of Britain.
Who dwells there? Well, I do ! |

I lived there for four years as a student in the 90s. You shouldn't necessarily be surprised at its creativity, it has a huge student population, two very good universities (Manchester itself and UMIST) and the Royal Northern College of Music and Chethams which are busting with talented musicians. It is also very big and increasingly international and its economy has improved a lot, even since I was there. After finishing at Manchester I went down to London. Manchester is friendlier on the whole, people e.g. on the next table in the pub will often chat to you, and at workplaces the people are also less cold and distanced than Londoners. This is what the north is generally like, it is further away from the centre of power and lacks the class consciousness and social snobbery of the south east. If you like Manchester then maybe you should get a job up there and try it out for a bit. |

As a Salfordian I am obviously biased towards my own City, the City of Salford, although I do venture into Manchester to watch my beloved Manchester City Football Club. |

I'm Manc, and I think it's a great city.
I've been at uni in Brum for the last 4 years, and I don't think it even starts to compare to Manchester. I still come home if I want to go shopping- it's far better than Brum. |

I live in Manchester, felt the music thing died off during the nineties. |

The city does have a buzz when it is in full swing, but if you live on the edge of it (within a mile of the centre), Manchester is a hole.
The people are however more friendly as a whole, and unlike London, will actually talk to strangers. Just avoid football as a subject, unless you support Man U or Man City. |

No it's not weird at all. I am from Oldham which I suppose you could class as Manchester as I live a few miles away from the center and shop and go to bars down their often. It's a vibrant , exciting city whith lots to see and do. You should come up for a few days to expierence it yourself! |

It depends on what you're used to. I'm from Newcastle and Manchester seemed like a sprawling and overwhelming metropolis in comparison, stranger and less friendly than what I was used to in many ways but fascinating all the same.
There were certainly many unique things about Manchester that I'd never experienced in Newcastle, such as a mile-long street that consisted of virtually nothing but curry restaurants, and otherwise ordinary corner shops where the checkout assistant was encased inside a cubicle of bullet-proof perspex, like in a bank. (Manchester has a problem with gun crime, I gather.)
Manchester is certainly friendlier than London, but there aren't many places in the world that are less friendly than London.
If you live in Cambridge I can see why you find Manchester exciting (Cambridge is boring, and far too posh for someone like me) but if you've never visited Newcastle I suggest you come north and give it a try. We're friendlier than the Manchester lot, and you may well prefer it. |

it is, and always has been, a magical, almost supernatural place, full of eccentric people and quirky places ; the terms ' contrasts' and ' spectrums' could have been invented for this place; I've been around, but I've never seen so much diversity of thought, feeling, expectation, ideas and ethos in one place, as here in Manchester. When I hear what much older people say about it, I can tell it was just as unique i their time. Have you read dave Haslam's book on Manchester music ? And have you seen the wonderful paintings of Adolphe Vallette and Liam Spencer, or the photos of Shirley Baker and Harold Riley. Go on, Manc- lover, you know you want to !! Hope you'll come and ' get the vibe' soon |

I live in Homlcroft...greater Manchester...makes me a united supporter.
the people are ok it always rains i mean why on earth would you like Manchester... i'm still at Uni IN Yorkshire but my Gf's in Leeds and tbh i'd prefer there
my dream place to live though is sheffield !!
oh and Manchester is a **** hole because it is...simple and unexplainable |

Not really. I know what you mean though, having lived there for three years. The place does have an interesting feel to it. The music scene there isn't so great nowadays. What do you mean when you say 'culture'?
I can't understand why anyone from England would find it so fascinating, unless you'd never been there before. It's like any other city - it's got a buzz to it, but it doesn't last for long. |
