I would recommend this -www.bigbustours.com
sight-seeing tour of london via bus, you will see all the sights and sounds without wearing out your feet, you can hop on and off, as you wish , it is well worth the money, don't eat in restaurants, they are overpriced, most pubs serve food it is good value for money, keep hold of your purse on the tube, beware of pickpockets

the open top bus tours are great fun and a good for orientation but they're also expensive compared to normal public transport ... take the open top bus for a day and do the whole tour (don't spend much time going into places) then afterwards go back to the ones you want to spend time in by normal public transport ... on public transport don't buy single tickets, buy yourself a one day travelcard (details on www.tfl.gov.uk) or if you're here for longer a three day travelcard ... there's so many places you could visit but you would need to narrow it down to what you find most interesting, e.g. history, museums, landmarks, theatres, street markets

where you stay doesn't matter too much as long as you're not far from a tube station

Anywhere - the tube gets you wherever you want to go pretty quickly.
If you can afford it you'd be best off staying in the west end for the shows & star-spotting at the premieres in leicester square and nightlife etc

Like you I was spending a few day in a large city (new york) and was getting conflicting advice from people. I would say buy the eyewitness travel guide to London and do some research.
It also depends on what YOU want from your trip, if I listened to people I would not have gone, But I loved it as we had planned the trip around what we wanted. Maybe you could post on here what things you are looking for and we can help you from there.
London like all cities is Noisy, busy and expensive.

One of my favourite places to stay is London's South Bank. There’s a great selection of cafes, bars and restaurants for all budgets. It’s within easy walking distance from Covent Garden, Soho, Westminster and the City of London.

In December you have the usual top attractions plus an addictive festive atmosphere.

Try taking a flight on the London Eye, if you can afford to treat yourself book a private capsule where you can enjoy mulled wine and mince pies or Winter Pimms and chocolate truffles.

Trafalgar Square has a huge Christmas tree, and winter ice rinks spring up all over the place - Hyde Park, Hampton Court Palace and the Natural History Museum are just a few.

I would recommend the 'Royal National Hotel' in Russell Square. I stayed there last week. It's decent and it's about a 20 min walk from Covent Garden.

Alternatively, a slightly cheaper option is the Travelodge in King's cross which would obviously require you using tube/bus but is still pretty central and only 5 mins or so from KIngs Cross station

Matt A
Avoid the tube! - Go on one the many open topped buses, - they will take you all around the best parts and you can get on and off wherever you like all day long

Mr Englishman
Are you sure you wanna stay in London?

Far better to take day trips there.

Maybe, if you live in New York, then London will be a breeze. But it really is a shite hole, honestly.

Julia H
Forget London.
It's full of foreigners, and people that want nothing from you but your money.
Head out into the 'real' country. You will get more of a picture of how we Brits are, and live. Oxford is beautiful, the Lake district is spectacular, as are North Wales and Scotland.
The people are a lot friendlier than in London, elsewhere in the country. You are less likely to be a victime of crime, though not guaranteed.
