Edinburgh. Lovely old cobbled streets, castle, ghost and literary walks, gardens etc. Lots to do and a very cosmopolitan city now too. |

I have to vote for York - it has the walls, the railway museum (which is more fun than you might think), the river boats, the ancient pubs, the market stalls, the Jorvik experience, excellent shops and little streets (including Whip ma Whop ma), the Minster, and so on. It gets very full when the University is up so go now!
Oh and they take late night and weekend policing extremely seriously so no troubles there. |

York is an excellent city. Other cities of interest are Chester, canterbury, Stratford upon Avon, Edinburgh, Durham, Norwich, Oxford, Cambridge, Ely and Newcastle upon Tyne.
Can I suggest that you do not visit at a weekend. Our cities are ruined at weekends by people who spend the whole day drinking - trouble breaks out by 4pm abd our cities are not nice places to be after 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
I had to stay in Peterborough over a weekend recently, as I had to attend an unarmed combat course in connection with my employment. Peterborough has a good city centre, plenty of shopping, good cafes and restaurants and the cathedral is marvellous. However, our saturday course finished at 3pm, and we were advised by our instructors (Peterborough folk) to be off the streets by 5pm. I had booked in a city centre hotel of good calibre - my room faced the front of the hotel, on a major thoroughfare.
Sitting in my room at 4pm, with my window open, I heard the smashing of glass. Looking out, I saw a group of drunken young people throwing bottles at each other. I went down to the bar for a drink at 5pm and found that the hotel door was manned by two (licenced), burly, security officers.
I took Dinner in the hotel restaurant, and I commented to the waiter as to how quiet the restaurant was - where I live, one has to book a table in advance on a saturday night. The waiter sighed and replied that nobody comes into Peterborough town centre on weekend nights, except young adults seeking to get pissed, eat fast food, and fight each other, and anyone else.
All I can say is that the roaring and belching, the obscene chants, the smashing of glass and the wailing of police sirens continued until nearly 4 am. I was then able to get some sleep.
Don't visit UK cities at weekends, if you wish to enjoy, safely, any nightlife. I'm trained in control and restraint, an ex amateur wrestler - I know how to kill someone with 2lb of pressure on the right parts of the body. By gum, if I'm scared to go out, there is something wrong somewhere. |

You simply have to go to Ironbridge it is amazing and there are loads of great hotels. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Telford which was near enough but there is loads to see and do for a whole weekend in what is surely one of the most beautiful parts of the country. It was so good there we are planning to move there in the future. |

Chester is a really nice place, I only live about 20 mins from there and its one of my fav places to go, specially if it is a nice day!
You can go on a tour of the city on an open top bus, or, get guided round by a roman! ha ha!
The shops are great there and they are set within the walls of the city and in the main street they are housed in the historic black and white "rows". |

Chester is good....so is York if you like Tudor and roman stuff...personally I dont think you can beat Cornwall for a fabulous and historical place...they only have towns a nd villages though, not cities...but if you like Pirates, shipwrecks and smuggling then its the best....also very, very beautiful. |
