Have you been to Cardiff?

I am looking for a holiday and a few people have told me that Cardiff has become a very nice City . The Bay area has become one of the cultural capitals of Wales and there is alot of Sight seeing to do there now . And someone also told me that it is very interesting to see the Welsh language , culture ect all round the City. I also heard that it is well worth a visit to the Millenium Centre and the millenium stadium.

I have been to Cardiff many times, always for work, on contracts!
I have also been to many other places in the UK and all over the world, always working!
Hand on heart I think Cardiff is about the best spot I have been to, the people are fantastic , I don't think I have ever been to a more cosmopolitan place anywhere, all nationalities seem to get on very well. (Maybe with the exception of the English visitors)!!
Not many in the South of Wales speak Welsh, so what, who cares? But they are all proud to be called 'Welsh'
You are correct there are many places of great interest to visit, but mainly I found all the people to be great!!.
Great place, go for it and have a good holiday.

Yes, come to Cardiff - it's great! There's definitely plenty of sight-seeing, including the castle, the museum (which has a fantastic collection of impressionist paintings) and Cardiff Bay. The Millennium Stadium is also worth visiting - you can do a stadium tour if there isn't a match on. St Fagans is a good Welsh museum just outside Cardiff and it's a really good base to visit the Brecon Beacons to the north and the coast (e.g. Ogmore or Southerndown) to the west.

As someone else said, Cardiff isn't the most Welsh place in Wales in terms of language, but you're likely to hear some spoken.

Well being from South Wales then obviously im slightly biased, but cardiff night life is great, there are lots of interesting places to visit around cardiff and its neighbouring villages. Although, the welsh language is said to be dying off, u will be surprised how many people continue to speak welsh in south wales. The theatre and stadium are well worth a visit, and also you will have a good day shopping, Cardiff bay is fab for a spot of lunch, and also you have the ice rink and the CIA which offers performances by popular artists. If you do come to wales theres a few things you gotta try......first on the list is laver bread and also cockles....but swansea market would be your best bet for that, also you have to try some welsh cakes and last but not least........have faggots and peas.....theres also a really day out in st faggins which depicts over many years the welsh culture and traditions....someone mentioned mumbles in swansea bay.....if you get a chance u must visit there its breathtaking on a summers day or a winters morning.......the university at swansea has the talisen and an egyptian centre which is well worth a visit. Also the gower is fab, with little sea side places to visit like port eynon and oxwich.. ..Welsh people are friendly and will be delighted to show u and help you around cardiff or where ever else you wish to go ........good luck and hope you visit soon xx

Alex
Cardiff is great, i live in South Wales and it has improved so much, its the fastest growing city in the EU. They are building new shopping centres. The millenium stadium is great, very big.

cardiff is good. its got lots of things to do. u can see cardiff castle and the open museum about welsh history. cardiff bay is good for bars and restaurants. here is a good list of attractive things to do in cardiff.

you can also take a train into the valleys. a place called Hay-on-Wye is a historical town, u cant miss.
all the best in cardiff.

I used to live in Swansea and every now and then we'd get the train down to Cardiff. As others have said, it's good for a day trip, but really not worth more than that. I have never been to the bay though and it's been a few years since I was last in the city itself. The castle is worth going to, and aside from the high street shopping opportunities there are a few lovely little arcades with smaller shops that are good to wander through. One time we went to the Welsh club Clwb Ifor Bach where everyone speaks, well, Welsh. Dwy cwrw os gwelwch yn dda!

If you are limited to public transport, there are some worthwhile day trips in the region. Over the border into England Bristol & Bath aren't far away. Swansea's town centre isn't that great but you can get the bus out to the Mumbles which is a lovely seaside village (taken over by students on a Saturday night!) and from there you can go walking on the Gower. You can get buses from the main bus station in Swansea out to the further reaches of the Gower but the services are infrequent.

No I have not been to Cardiff.

Cardiff was always worth a look but now it's terrific!

along with all the new stuff such as the millennium centre and stadium there's still the castle and some excellent museums.

outside cardiff there's the fairytale castell coch and caerphilly castle which is the largest in europe. it's also only 40-odd miles to the brecon beacons and the coast and lovely vale of glamorgan is on the doorstep.

st ffagans is brilliant - an outdoor museum made up of old houses brought brick by brick from around the country.

as for the use of welsh - 1/3 of young people in the south now speak the language and the number is growing. so there's been a real shift in its use and so bilingual signs and announcements (eg at the train station) are everywhere.

have fun!

I love the place. The city centre has got lots to do. You can get to the coast quickly, or into the mountains if you prefer that sort of scenery.

As a number of people have mnetioned, the bay area is great for food and is especially nice on a sunny sunday (good luck with that :).

Make sure you visit the Gower peninsular if you get time. Beautiful

Yes it is very nice.
I studied in Swansea and had to get away from it as much as possible and Cardiff was the way to go.
The castle is breathtaking and the night life quite good.
Welsh is just historically put on signs and is spoken only by the elderly.

what time are you looking for your holiday cos its cheaper in September-November then it is in say June-august (they all rip you off) be like me and ask WHY

Sus
It has improved, it really has. But it's not worth a holiday. You could spend maybe a day looking around, but really you should go to Wales' countryside in the Spring. I wonder if someone's maybe pulling your leg...

credible_bulk
Cardiff is a sleepy little seaside town with just enough to do to make it interesting. It's a little isolated, but you can drive to San Diego or Orange county for day trips.

Luis G
I have been to Cardiff by the Sea in California. It's wonderful there. But not Wales I wouldn't know about that.
