It was my favourite childhood holiday place. We used to stay at a guesthouse called Viking Lodge just at the edge of town.
I loved the harbour and the way the shops and houses kind of peer over each other's shoulders to get a view of the water. When I was really little, there was one of those big salvaged red-painted wartime mines on the quayside, as a collection box for the RNLI.
Another childhood memory is of the glass shop that used to sell Whitby lucky ducks that you could watch being made. I still have some of them...
The abbey is amazing, worth every one of those leg-aching steps up to it. Little wonder that Stoker set Dracula there!
The cliff-walks are great, and I have a real soft spot for the beach at Sandsend, where the little brook crosses the beach.
What a wonderful place to call home!

Yes, Ive been to Whitby about 5 times with my parents caravaning it during the early80s. I think its the most amazing place. As a child, I used to look for Whitby Jet (a kind of black semi prescious stone) fossilised coal and also look for fossils. Everytime Ive holidayed there, Ive returned home with a bag of fossil ammonites and shells. Theres a cliff on the right hand side of the harbour (next to a small bridge) which is jammed packed with fossils. Oh yeah, I know Whitby well and hopefully I can retire there when Im old! |

Yes! We used to go on holiday to Runswick Bay when I was a kid, and we used to go to Whitby for fish and chips. I have very fond memories of Whitby. |

Yeah, twice. Stayed at a campsite just by the coast- you have to walk down the slope to get to the beach, but is very pretty. Only problem I had was the 100 steps leading to Whitby centre (killed my legs!) and the heavy duty winds you get up on that campsite!
And I liked the sweet shop that sells aniseed balls- haven't seen them elsewhere in ages |

I have on a Uni trip twice! I love it there! It has a great view, nice little city and the church at the top of the hill. It is really nice looking at the sea from there and it was fun playing in the sea =) I saw a pirate ship once too!! hehe! |
