Hey, I was just wondering if any residents in the UK knew of any ways of getting dirt cheap rail tickets? |
I am currently a student and may have a summer job in london. I was looking at the price of a season ticket which with tube access is around £300-£400a month meaning i would have to pay close to £1000 over the summer for tickets. Does anyone know any ways of avoiding this? I have looked into bus travel but my town only has national express going to london and the airports are very far away from the center of london. |

You don't say where you are from but the Megabus may run to London from wherever you live. It's really cheap.
If not try booking well in advance (approx 6-8 weeks) for your rail tickets. If you know the dates you're travelling I'd advise booking at your local railway station as they will search the database for the cheapest tickets. Or try the National Rail website.
For the tube travel you would be better off with an Oyster card |

nothing is cheep in this country i'm afriad. you may find it better to take a short term rental for the summer. If you do stay in london then get an oyster card for the tube, though becareful, its not valid on all over ground rail services. |

Rail travel is not cheap unless you book in advance you can get great advance fares. |

I don't know where in the UK you live, but have you looked at the Megabus? This allows you to travel between various cities for just a few pounds at a time. For example, Preston to London is a pound each way. I think Bristol to London is something like £3-£5 each way. I'm not exactly sure as to individual prices, nor can I remember the exact website address, but if you type Megabus into a search engine, you should find it from there. |

The UK is England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland altogether,
London is in England.
Are you one of these people who only calls England, the UK? |

I don't quite understand what you want, however here are a few suggestions:-
a) Book early for train tickets and buy singles at LeisureAdvance fares. See Q-jump website. Presuming that you already have a Young Persons railcard?
b) Buy an Oyster card. If you will be living in Zones 3-4, commuting in to zone 1 you're better off going on pay as you go with automatic top up. If you will be living in Central London (zones 1-2) and commuting in to these zones, a monthly season ticket is an affordable option. Buses with an Oyster are 90p per journey and Tube at £1.50 per journey (Zone 1-2) rates.
c) Even consider bus travel if you are living in Zone 1-2. It is cheaper than the tube and the frequency of buses is good.
d) If you are working there just for the summer, consider getting some temporary lets. There are many good agencies out there. However, expect for rent in Zones 1-2 to be around £165-£200 per week and for Zones 3-4 to be about £110 plus. |

Could you not buy a young person's railcard (valid from 16 to 25 yrs of age) as this gives you a third off fares. |

Could you perhaps look into short term digs in London? Where is it you might be coming from and working (roughly)? But then again accomodation is going to be fairly expensive too, so the deal for the season ticket seems reasonable, unless you're paying rent for your place in the summer.. Is it worth getting an Oystercard? |

Depends on your working hours and how often you are travelling. Both the Network Card (for southern England only)£20 per annum and the Young Persons Railcard £24 per year (national coverage) give 30% discount on off peak singles and return rail fares i.e. after 10am weekdays, anytime weekends. National Express coaches are not a reality for a commute: besides being slow and infrequent, they suffer greatly from traffic delays on routes into London. Rail fares are high in England but you are paying for a very high frequency service indeed on most routes into London. |
