Hi, I'm American and I was thinking about going to London, where are some cool places to go?

I'd be going with my Mom. I know we'll be going to all the cultural stuff but I was wondering about the less touristy stuff to do. Like, what and where some cool stores are. Thanks. Have you been to America and if so, where'd you go?

Hi! I'm from Norway, but I love going to London and the UK.

You should try to visit some of the markets, like Portobello Road or the one in Camden Town. An absolutely must is Carnaby Street (not far from Oxford Circus and Regent street) with all the punk shops.

The British Library is also a cool place too, even though it's full of books.

Harrods, the big department store in Knightsbridge is well worth a visit.

The Notting Hill area got lots of funny little restaurants and bars.
The best thing when visiting a large city is just drift around and explore.

Would love to visit America one day, first on my list is New York, then Vermont and Maine.

Hope you'll enjoy London!

Besides the usual touristy stuff go to:

Old Compton Street in Soho for centre of gay community and amazing night/ social scene.

Walk from the London Eye (nr Westminster underground stn) to London bridge on a sunny day.

Go to Brick Lane in nr Aldwich on a Friday/ Sat night (Don't bother trying their curry houses) for some nice bars.

Walk along the river near Hammersmith to an old pub called the Dove http://www.pubs.com/pub_details.cfm?ID=175

Walk through St James park at night (with someone else preferably)- beautiful.

Have a drink/ eat on a boat near Embankment stn and visit Somerset house for winter ice-skating (book ahead)

Goto these nightclubs: Fabric, The End or The Legion (Shoreditch) (Book ahead).

Go to a restaurant in Angel at the weekend.

Visit Canary Wharf, the Docklands lite railway (DLR) and the cutty sark pub in greenwich.

Visit the Docklands in east london on a Sunny day.

I live there so here's something a little different.

Spitalfields Market in the old city has some really interesting stuff (Liverpool St. Station). It's also near the famous Brick Lane where all the best Bangla Deshi restaurants are. Borough Market (London Bridge) is a buzzing food market. Camden is cool, as has been mentioned.

An interesting walk is to get the Docklands Light Railway to 'Island Gardens', from where you can walk under the Thames through an old Victorian tunnel. You come out at Greenwich which also has a trendy market.

Avoid Oxford Street which has the same stores as everywhere else on the planet and is always crowded. Harrods, at the far end, is interesting though if you are mega-rich!

Hope this helps, enjoy your stay.

Ive been alll over the states and i love the people and the country, i just wish i could come and live over there but i dont have further education or a skill base they need. As for London, i wouldnt bother, its a complete S*it hole filled with Eastern European imigrants who cant speak English, all the english have left!

best store ever- topshop oxford street. there's nothing like it in the states for fashion shopping. trust me...it's an experience in its self (since you sound like a student girl!).

the good/decently priced shopping is all on oxford street but its quite touristy and so so crowded.

another really cool shop to go to is called Liberty around carnaby street. it's a department store in a really old building and it's beautiful!

for cool vintage stores and little shops try Carnaby Street (close to Oxford street). try to find the little indoor area. it has awesome shops! brick lane area is also good for vintage places.

harrods-the biggest department store in the world. it's amazing...check out the food halls as it's tough to afford anything else!

best london experience in my opinion is the markets. portobello rd. for antiques on saturdays. the brick lane/sunday "up" market on sundays. for food- bourough market thurs-sat (i think). they're awesome and really something lacking in America. go to at least 1 if you can!

my favorite place for cool shops is definitely Covent Garden! find the area around it called "seven dials" thats a bit less touristy. it's a very cool area...i've been there at least 10 times and manage to find a new cool store each time!

aside from shopping:
see a show!! the national theatre is awesome and has some decently priced ones. for musical tickets go to the half price tkts booth on liecester square.

you can't go to london without going to a pub! just go for dinner or some fish and chips since you're with mom. you'll find tons everywhere.

the victoria and albert museum is beautiful! and the british museum is a must as well

walk along the river around the london eye! such a pretty view of the city. another awesome view is off millenium bridge (ever seen Love Actually...it's in that!)

brick lane for indian/bengali food. so delicious!

Oh, I'm American. I'm a student in London!

In addition to what Dan suggested.... Check out Borough Market (very close to London Bridge) on a sat morning for a real taste of Ye Olde London, has the best atmosphere and a few old tea shops and pubs thrown in....

Has been used as film sets before...

London is a dump. The London underground is terrible expensive etc. Infact everything about London is expensive. London stinks. The people are unfriendly. Spend a day in London then get out of London.

Theres many nicer places in England. The City of Liverpool. York. Leeds. Harrogate, Durham, The Lake District and Wales.

I have been to USA

NYC
NY State
Kentucky
