I'm an American living in UK and here are some suggestions...
chocolates - I never knew how crappy our chocolates were till I tried them overseas. Hersheys do nothing for me now.

canned pudding - the pudding in america are mushy deserts, not cake like goodness like english ones.

marmite - this is something that your friend will either love or hate, but you definitely won't find it in america.

i would suggest the tasty english sausages (nothing tastes like it in america) but I don't know what the restrictions are for shipping meats overseas.

oh oh oh, and custard!

Got to be Marmite. No-one else in the world understands it, they will really think we're all mad.

Are you allowed to send foodstuffs over? I thought they were pretty strict about letting things in?

How about some hp sauce?

minimumma
crisps uk has the best crisps ever walkers salt and vinagar monster munch hula hoops yummy you can send me some too

Jen
Fuller's London Pride Beer
Chocolate - US chocolate has parrafin (wax) in it to keep it from melting because it's so hot.

I should be doing something else
Cadburys Chocolate, a box of Mr Kiplings French Fancies, a box of teabags, tin of Heinz beans, and a magazine (Heat/Take a Break etc)

My friend in America always wants British chocolate!
Especially Thorntons - she went there twice in a 3 day stay in London. Cadbury's is popular too.
Other British friends have said the same, when they visit friends in America they always want chocolate :)

yes, Ice100 (below) is right - magazines are a good idea, my friend enjoyed the ones I brought to read on my flight.

Be careful with food etc. - get some info on what you're allowed to send.
Meat/Fish/Dairy Products are a definite NO.

with DVDs/tapes, as someone suggested, you'll only run into Region Code and Format troubles.

Something I always make sure to buy in large quantities when in Britain is actually Blue Tack (or White Tack, or whatever you prefer).
It's so incredibly simple and useful, and many countries don't have it.

Btw; I remember having a similar discussion in Germany months ago; someone said that you should check out if there's actually a US internet store where you could order British food stuff and have it sent directly to your friend.
You avoid trouble with food import regulations - and with p&p and all that, sending a package within the US might come actually cheaper than sending a package all the way to America.

They can't get most of our sweets so they are always welcome and our biscuits. I think their bacon is very different, although I don't know how well that would travel. I think the best thing would be some British Drama, or maybe DVDs of our kids shows like the old Cosgrove Hall stuff, and things like The Snowman which are very British, and how about a DVD of our proms?

A great idea, I used to have the same arrangement with a friend overseas, I'd find a small strong carton and fill it with all sorts, minature bottles of Scotch, sweeties, newspaper clippings, stones, seashells, photos, Scottish shortbread, pressed flowers and weeds from the garden, treasures from car boot sales etc etc. A few times the packages were intercepted by Customs but it all got through eventually!
