I would have to disagree with some of the other contributors to your question.

Birmingham is an industrial town with a heritage of industry. There are places to see and I have given you a couple of websites that you might find interesting:-

This one is for the Black Country Museum
http://www.bclm.co.uk/

The centre of Birmingham has been redeveloped and has a vast array of shops. It is modern and draws in people from a wide area of the country.

There are nice bars and resturants along the canals. Eating out in Birmingham can be relatively inexpensive. There are also some very nice small towns with historical interest around Birmingham. Lichfield Cathederal is worth a visit.

I hope you enjoy your trip.

bullrings?

There is a train station called New Street. That is a dump as well but at least you can get a train out of the place!!

sorry to tell you that Birmingham is one of Britain's sh** hole crime capitals, so if you plan to hang round in any of the local malls make sure you have your stab vest on and don't carry anything worth more then 50 cents.

Why Birmingham? Not much going on. Best place to shop is the Bull Ring in the city centre. For nights out go to Broad Street or head towards Hurst Street if you fancy a bit of gay culture! Star City is also good for shopping, food, drink cinema etc. Seriously consider going somewhere else though - Brum is not much of a holiday destination!

I too, have to ask - why Birmingham? If it has to be there, I suggest taking a coach to nearby Stratford upon Avon to see Shakespeare's birthplace - it's a pretty town, with lots to see and do, including small specialist shops, and of course, the theatre.

The Bullring is a good place to shop, it is in the centre of Birmingham. Although Birmingham does not have much to offer, it has several good museums and an excellent transport link, only 90 minutes from london on the train.

Whilst in Brum though you must go to the balti triangle and have a proper curry. Adils on ladypool road is pretty good.

Broadstreet is where all the good pubs and clubs are. The Mailbox has the big name shops and some really nice restaurants, as does Brindley Place near the canals.

I have lived in Birmingham for years and although I try to escape whenever I can, there is a lot to offer.

Black country museum, Ikon Gallery, MAC centre are all worth a visit plus the museum and art gallery. The Thinktank is supposed to be good but I refuse to pay to visit a museum. (I would pay to see a film at the IMAX though)

Every city is different. I'd advise planning a few trips to other places as well as exploring Birmingham.

This is a message from England - in England Birmingham is a joke as far as interest is concerned. There are many better places to go.

. . . don't say you weren't given good advice - and as for the Peewit-gang (they're probably gun-toting, knife-carrying, alocoholic, glue-sniffing, drug-pushing smackheads) if you want to make contact they're usually dossing behind Lichfield Cathedral . . .

spud
Yes.....Change your destination!!!!

Birmingham's not as bas as it used to be!

Still a long way to go before it qualifies for a top 50 holiday destination but you'll have a laugh if you want a few drinks to wet the baby's head!

Lawyer
When you go there you can go to Star City, Stratford( town of Shakespeare, not far from B'ham)

?
Nowhere like that springs to mind. Can't you ask your brother to bring the baby to you??? Birmingham SUCKS!

Brummie Geeza
Dont listen to everyone else. OK, Birmingham has a bad reputation but you do not need to wear a bullet proof vest/stab vest or have a gun. The only reason Birmingham has a bad reputation is because sh!t heads like these people insult it, even though half of them have probably never even been and heard everything from rumours. Can i just say, people, to get your facts straight before you go slagging off this city? And comparing it to Downtown Baghdad is just plain stupidity. Theres as much crime in Liverpool, Manchester, London and any other big city.
Ive lived here all my life, and the place i would recommend would be the Bull Ring. Its a very new modern shopping centre and I can honestly say its the best one ive ever been to. They hold special events there eg the Summer Music and the Film Screening: www.bullring.co.uk. Theres the Sea Life Centre, loads of parks, the Mailbox (an area with high class shopping, restaurants and bars) and Cadbury World (the chocolate tour!) Hope it helps

kirsty m
yeah, dont go!!!!

i live in b'ham and i agree it can be boring.. but dont most people find the place they live in boring? coz its nothing new for them...
well.. since you hav to go to birmingham you might aswell enjoy it.. there are loads of places to go to.. firstly THE BULLRING.. it is fantastic loads of shops and very modern.. then there is Merry Hill shopping centre... also fort shopping centre... and in star city.. there you can shop, watch a movie in the cinema and eat at restaurants like Nando's, burger king.. etc
Another shopping centre is Touchwood shopping centre in solihull..
anyway.. hope you enjoy your stay.. and be weary of birmingham residents.. we hav been voted the rudest people.. although i dont agree...

hippoterry2005
I live near Brum and agree with those who say that it does not deserve a bad reputation, although it would never figure highly as a holiday destination.
The museum and art gallery are OK, also ThinkTank and IMax at Millennium Point. There are some top class theatres, Symphony Hall and the Royal Ballet. Sea Life Centre is good. See what is on at the National Indoor Arena or the Arena at the NEC.
Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston.
For historic buildings go to Aston Hall (by Villa Park stadium) and there are lots of National Trust properties within an hours drive.
Theme Park at Drayton Manor.
West Midlands Safari Park at Bewdley.
Severn Valley steam railway at Kidderminster.
Shopping at Bull Ring or Merry Hill.
Buy some jewellry in the Jewellry Quarter.
The football season is starting in a few days so you have Birmingham City, Villa , West Brom, Wolves, Walsall.
Cricket at Edgbaston.
Try Worcester or the Shropshire hills (Church Stretton).
Nip over to Coventry or Lichfield to look at the cathedrals.

?
Hi! Have fun in Birmingham...!! make sure your packing a Gun... it's like downtown Baghdad... it does have " the Bullring" www.bullring.co.uk .. and it is famous for Spaghetti junction - loads of Motorways crossing over...stay safe... come to Glasgow instead..

Birmingham gets a lot of bad press for no good reason it has no more crime then any other major city such as London, Manchester, Liverpool shall i go on.

It is a great place to visit with lots to see and do and loads of history, my advice would be to log on to any Birmingham website or go to the tourist information centre when you get here and they will be able to tell you the best places to go.

Do not listen to the small minded people who have only told you what they think Brum is all about you need to visit to know the truth.

Hope you enjoy it

Chris
I agree with Lisa K,
Don't listen the morons on here who have never been to U.K.s second city Birmingham.
Great night life, great culture, better shopping then London, "Fact"
What's Liverpool and Manchester got, Docks maybe?
