Thats the reason because the wood is not meant to stand the tornados imagine if bricks and mortar flew arounds it would be carnage. |

all to do with weather! Heat is contained better inside thick brick walls....stands up to snow weight as well...less draughty as it warps with heat/cold. England hasn't had a history where wars and battles were survived because they were in wooden forts.....they needed bricks and stone for protection too!
Hot countries need to release heat for the house so use bigger windows....houses on stilts.....wood instead of brick....their needs were different to our especially where battles were concerned....
Hot countries that use brick usually paint them white to reflect heat away.....have cold floors made of local stone or tiles.....low flat roofs to keep away from the heat..... |

I think I go with the idea that wood is safer in a wind than bricks and easier to rebuild. Also it is cheap and a lot of Americans are quite poor - don't believe the ads based on the coastal cities only.
I lived in the Caribbean and one of the best houses to have when there is a hurricane is a leaky wooden shack as it offers little wind resistance and so stays where it is. The "hurricane pro" concrete condos go with a bang once their structural integrity is slightly breached! |

Loads of American houses were built with inferior material s so to be as cheap as possible as so many Americans were relatively poor and could not afford better brick or stone houses. Also the number who live in trailer parks rather than conventional houses... Apart from the small proportion of very rich people the average American earns less in true terms than the majority of Europeans. |

Wood would rot in Britain. Plus after the great fire of London in 1666, wood houses went out of vogue for good, and never regained any popularity. That is the strongest reason. |

,John J i think you,ve answered the wrong question.!!!
Is it by choice they choose to build in wood or the conditions of the weather in those states? |

Americans do not have the intelligence to use a spirit level, they only know about hitting things with a hammer, why use a screw when a nail will do |

i've always wondered abt this. ur so right. i've been in UK since 2001, & i always thought 1 of the major reasons i wudn't stay in UK is because of the wood houses.
i think the reason houses r built this way is bcos of the money. ppl can afford more, build more, sell more, all with a bigger margin then wud have been the case with bricks and stones.
but wood houses r a pain. 1st of all it CREAKS after a few years. its so horrible if it makes noise all the time, when u walk arnd the house, especially at night when everyones sleeping. 2nd there is no privacy. if ur living alone with ur wife then its ok, but if u live with ur family or when u have kids down the line, i cant imagine what privacy will be there. u can hear everything from one room to another. i really donno how couples have a 'good' time, if they have ppl arnd the house. do they wait until every1 goes out? i really feel sorry for them.
i come from bangladesh & cant wait to go back. the houses r all made of brick and stones. it feels like a home. its a tropical country but the floor feels so cool under ur feet & u can hardly hear a thing from 1 room to another. |
