British and Australian culture share many similarities but they are increasingly distinct - slang and some language is different, Australia is egalitarian (equality of opportunity) while Britain has an entrenched class system, Australia has a more outdoorsy/sporty culture owing to the great weather, Australian tend to be larrikins while British have a tendency for hooliganism ;) |

the aussies can drink the britts under the table. lol and to hell with all of you *** wipes out there saying australia has no culture. did you forget that we have native australians here that have a very wise and ancient culture.the native aussies have some great dreamtime strories, there ability to survive in the harshest environment is amazing, as well as there tribal rituals are very cultural. otherwise thr rest of us are atually brittish, italian, greek, chinese, japanese or indian. |

Well, the english think they rule the world, the scots are some of the nicest people you would ever meet, the irish are the irish and the welsh are ten times nicer then the english. So except for the english, the brittish are really nice people. |

The Pommies (English) are born whingers (nothing is ever suitable, the weather, food, housing, you name it; they whinge about it in Australia. They don't have a sense of humour like us "stiff upper lip and all that jazz' we can laugh at anything (they need permission from the Queen.) They can't cook, the food in UK is so boring except for the Indian food, curries and fish and chips, the Poms are hopeless at food. Aussies are willing to try all types of foods from all over the world. We have our own language (slang) we drink beer how it should be drunk (cold) the pommies drink it warm..yuk! The warmest folks that I have ever met in Great Britain are the Scots, now they know how to make you welcome. Aussies welcome people from all walks of life, British don't have much choice, their country is more European than British now. |

The Australians I've met are pretty much like working-class Brits - up for a laugh, like a beer + a bit of sport n fanny, n talk as daft as we possibly can. I think a lot of the stereotypes your labling the Brits with are the middle and upper classes (which again emphaisizes the difference in countries as us Brits make an issue of class).
Auzzies are better cricketers overall (hurts to say that) n us Brits praise the likes of Shane Warne no end. But in defense of us Brits when everybody's mentioning our bad points can I just say:
Australia gave you - AC/DC, INXS, Kylie Minogue.
We gave you - The Beatles, Led Zep, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Iron Maiden, The Sex Pistols, Oasis, Queen, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Slash (born in Stoke on Trent) etc. etc....
So don't think we're all bad + the above bands weren't exactly of the "stiff upper lip" nature were they?
We also still clean our teeth with soot. |

British people talk funny and they don't know what real sunlight is cos the sky over there is always grey. Lol. Don't get me wrong though, I love you all, and I love your country (yes i actually have visited England, so I know the sky is grey). |

I know us Brits are famous for being uptight and trust me a lot of us are (not me though, I'm so very friendly, everyone's invited to my house for beers!) but when I went to australia (gorgeous country by the way) I found the city people to be very uptight and unfriendly. The country folk were really nice though! The British are a very misunderstood race ;) its not that we are stuffy and have no character, its just that our humour is so understated that all our jokes are so hidden, you only know a Brit has made a joke if you know where to look for the joke. We generally don't do in your face humour! (except for old school humour like monty python etc). Anyway, I really love the aussies but they can't play cricket can they ;) (Just joking, when the Brits beat the aussies at any sport its usually just luck) |

Not much, except we bath more often than you guys, and don't whinge as much, maybe that comes with lack of sun!LOL. Sorry I don't mean to be patronising, but both of our countries have some of the best and strongest men in the services. At least our countries know how to use our heads in a situation. Instead of getting irate over soccer like you guys, we fight over Australian rules footy. Crickets fun to watch, especially the Ashes. I think genrally we are much the same, apart from we don't have a working class or white shirt heirachy like you guys do. It's more if you can do the job great! It doesn't matter where you come from. |

Australian culture is much more homogeneous, it is very similar everywhere in Australia. England has regional differences in accent, speech patterns, traditions, and vast economic regional differences. Australia is much more multicultural due to such a high percentage of migrants from just about everywhere. British tend to be more formal where as Australians are easy going. The British class system still prevails but it barely exists here. British tend to obey authorities willingly, but Australians tend to have a streak of anarchy in them. Because of the climate Australia has much more of an outdoor focus, and a higher percentage of sports participation, rather then sports spectators as in England. Australians are on average wealthier and the wealth is more evenly divided. The average standards of education are higher here. Australia has a feeling of a new country with opportunity and growth. Britain seems overcrowded and focused on the past
I have lived in both countries for long periods- Ken (Melbourne Australia) |

Only Fat Bob gave an answer worth reading, the rest were just a list of stereotypes. And by the way BRITAIN includes WALES, SCOTLAND AND N IRELAND as well as ENGLAND. Britain is NOT JUST ENGLAND!!.
I think that Aussies are becoming more and more like Americans in their ignorance about the rest of the world and their attitudes. Very sad. |

I have lived in both and i find most australians are a bunch of stereotypical tossers and i dislike then completly f*** all of you . The British are more uptight but they have class aussies seem scruffy and have no class at all and dont care about anything well their like america ignorant and think there the dogs bollocs . . Oh and aussies go Wooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa all the time . Ever since i came to australia people were tossers and ******** to me for no reason therefore i have devaloped a hatred for them . Go England . By the way i like some people in aussie land but their not aussie their European and Asian .Oh and England is becoming fucked up because of the pakies and immagrants so im fucked im stuck in australia . |

The Aussies think a lot of themselves and in the major cities are very racist (strange seems they are all foreigners)
Most Aussies live in London (or seems like it)
They only have 5 actors there and one of them is Skippy.
The majority of Aussies are great people just the odd few spoil it.
The Brits Can be stuck up but this is changing.
The Brits have a very good sense of humour and even like laughing at themselves and everyone else.
Not all Brits are louts.
The majority of Brits are great people just the odd few spoil it.
All in all :
Britain - old culture
Australia - New culture
we are after all, all human and deep down all the same. |

Possibly a lot like American and Canadian cultures differ.
In other ways:
In Australia one does not have to develop a certain accent to be acceptable to the middle classes and up as in the UK.
Apart from our native "aboriginal" people of 40,000 years heritage, our original white invasion heritage of 200 years ago was from England Ireland, Scotland and Wales. (we were prisoners of the English at the time, be it for political reasons or for petty thieving for food due to the wide gap between rich landowners and poor everyone else).
Up to one third of us "Anglo-Saxons" were of Irish heritage, so we are more relaxed and "take the mickey" more often.
Now, thanks to imaginative immigration schemes, we are an amazing melting pot of European, Asian, African, Middle eastern and everyone else on the planet. Although our native people (once massacred) are still treated poorly and our Prime Minister cannot say sorry to them.)
Although Britain has "colonised" a lot of the world, it was forced to do so, due to its small size, large population and need for resources.
Due to our sheer size, we are also (internally) more an exploring, pioneer race, having tamed wilderness etc. (mind you some of those were pommies guided or rescued by native Aboriginals)
Our beach/bush climate is to be envied by the whole world, not just Britain. Come to Bondi and count the Pommie backpackers!!
We are possibly more Americanised than Anglicised now due to the pervasion of THAT culture. However, we have retained a great fondness for the old blighty. That is why we still have the Queen as our ruler.
I visited London last year. I was impressed by the level of multi-culturism I saw there. We are very, very similar still, but give us another 2000 years and we will be perfect! That is uniquely Australian. No more apron strings!! |

I think that the main difference is the attitude to others and problems in general Aussies have the attitude of everything will be alright and don't really grumble about it where the Brits do and lots and loudly to anyone in hearing distance |

well. . . i am british and i have close relations who are australian yet we aren't really alike! I don't know in what way u mean how we differ bt british like to have more of a laugh. I don't know, I am used to the British culture but I couldn't say it's any better or worse than the Australian, it's just what you're used to. I do envy their lovely climate and beaches though. |

The british culture is so much older than ours so we Aussies are still enjoying our youth as a nation & havent yet found time to consider ourselves too precious, no doubt that will come with time but meanwhile we are a basically easy going culture, as someone mentioned the tall poppy syndrome is rife here so no-one really gets much oppotunity to take themselves too seriously for too long. It's all about fitting in, regardless of colour, race or creed, so long as you are genuinely "having a go"to be an OK type of bloke/chic & lending a hand when needed then you are pretty well accepted."Having an opinion "about things in general is important as Aussies love to have discussions but by the same token a "know-it-all" wins NO brownie points at all!! |

Australia is a more laid back country.
English a little more uptight.
Both love a drink, although having drunk with English, i'd say they drink more...But we have a good crack at it.
We are better at Cricket than them and rugby...
Just stirring there...
We were colonised by their criminals and have thrived away from the Motherland...
English have bad teeth.
Australians are much better looking ;) |

As a brit that has been to australia i hated it, its the most boring country in the world take sydney for example unless u live in the cbt its im possible to get around in less u have a car. the pubs are spread the best place there is kings cross. but named and looks like the english one. lol cant think there own names up. the beer is week like the american beer. english or british beer is cold if you get off ur *** and come here u will see that. The people i have met in the uk from oz are friendly. however, when your in the country they hate you the people are racist also mst of them are druggies becuase theres nothing to do there is ultra violet lights in the toliets to stop there druggies shooting up. look at the ship from holland that tried to drop off aslyam seeker off they sent in the sas to sink the ship if it enterend there water.the british had to take them and put them on one of our indian ocean terrortories. Also if Australia is so good and there schools are so good why are only british and american university's the only one ranked in the top 10. There is no aussie uni in the top 50. Timesonline, check it out. There is a class system here but u dont see it as much as you used to and it is easier to make it here. people in the uk are overall paid much better than in OZ also there is over 300 langauges spoken on the streets of london thats more than any other city in the world encluding new york. we have resturents from every country, we love chinese, japanese, eritrain and persian foods the food is good here, all sorts of food as well as our own. what food does oz have, fish and chips did this not come from england cadburys is this not british and pies how great all british food. we do wash and the teeth thing is a myth. the fooball thing i give u but that does not happen any more this has moved to spain and eastern europe. we are better than you a cricket and rugby union. i give you rugby league. british culture is still around there is no aussie culture it is little america, with british spellings. british tv and american tv, all they have is home and away. try new zeaaland its a much nice country and the people are niceer.oh and one thing pommie stands for prisoner of mother england so you dont need to call us pommies any more because were not the prisoner you area also we gave u monty pyton james bond the office the yanks copied it what comerdy have u given us and we can laugh at ourself we do it all the time. t |

The British have a distinct class system and Australian's couldn't care less really who you are.. "The Tall Poppy Syndrome" in cutting people down to size has definitely come from the Irish..
Well-------- "METROGEEZA?----------" I am an Aussie, but I come from a melting pot of many nationalities.. English, German, French, and Chinese.. You only like Asian and Europeans here in Australia, not Australians??? Maybe your attitude has something to do with the way you have been treated. Not everyone wears thongs and says WOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAA here!!! |
