How do you catch a train?

(Stupid question, I know.)

I've never been on a train before and don't really understand the procedure. Where do I go when I get to the station? Where do I pay for my ticket? How do I know where to get off? Etc, etc. If anybody could outline the steps I need to make in order to use a train I'd be very appreciative. Thanks :-)

You should be able to look up times and prices on the net.You pay at the counter when you go in.

stinkyfinger
go to the ticket office (there will be a big sign saying "TICKETS") and ask them for help on getting you to your destination. They will be very helpful.

If you are travelling from London to Newcastle, go to

http://www.gner.com.uk to see timetables, purchase and reserve tickets and find all the useful information to take the train.

1. Buy your ticket at the windows labelled 'tickets' Tell them where you want to go and if you a single or return ticket (if return when you're coming back).
2. Ask at desk when the next train there leaves and from which platform, or go look at the big screens which lists them all.
3. Find correct platform and get on the right train. At big stations like Newcastle there is usually a member of staff that you can ask if you're unsure.

gizmo
that question is much to hard for me to answer

Set a train trap - just inside a tunnel at night so the train won't see it!!

Go to a big building that has a sign saying TRAIN STATION on it, then go up to window signed TICKETS aks for your destination and time of travel, then go to the allocated platform there are big signs for these aswell. Then listen to the voice over the big speakers, they will tell you when your train has arrived ( you may also realise this when a massive long thing made of steel pulls up along side you.) get on it, sit down, and listen to the man on the speakers again he will tell you when your at your allocated station. If all this fails just call the person you are going to meet and tell them you can't make it.

qwerty
first call or get in contact with the train station and purchase a ticket. then you can ask them for tips or when you get there you get your ticket and find where the train will be leaving from and you wait and then u board. have a fun trip. (its similar to taking a plane)

teeth hoover
Go to the ticket office in the train station and tell the person where you want to go and if you want a single ticket or a return. Pay for said ticket and go and look on the screens overhead which will tell you when and which platform your train will be coming in. Proceed to the designated platform in a Walter Mitty fashion, and wait for your train. If unsure, ask a member of staff. When you've managed to get yourself on the train, an announcement will be made when approaching your stop. When the train stops, get off it. Voila!

Call a travel agent (You don't pay them the airlines, train and bus companies pay them. ) to learn schedules or get a schedule brochure.. Or if you have an active train station in your town go there to the ticket window for information..

In Florida we mainly have Am track with limited service We are a driving, flying state.
Good luck, I have never taken a train trip either. Have fun.

How do you catch a bus?

Ignore all of the prevoius answers. If you mean a train to Newcastle (as your question was posted on the Newcastle category), then I'll give an example if say you are travelling from London.

The London terminus for Newcastle is King's Cross station. Trains run frequently to the North-East of England and Edinburgh and the east coast of Scotland.

Just purchase your ticket at the ticket office stating intended destination. Better still, book your ticket online at the GNER website. The further ahead you book, the cheaper your ticket will be.

Join the train. Average journey time to Newcastle Central is 2hours 52 minutes.

Hope this proves useful to you.

Have a safe journey and enjoy your visit to the "Toon".

The train station has schedules clearly posted for all the trains - track numbers, destinations, everything. You just go to the ticket window and buy your ticket - tell them where you want to go, they can tell you what you need to do. You need to pay attention to the track number and the departure time, because depending on where you live, there may be a lot of trains that go through. Just because a train is leaving from the correct track doesn't mean that it is going to your destination. It might branch off two miles down the track and go someplace else. Once on the train, the conductor will go around checking tickets. Ask him how many stops it is to your destination. They are clearly marked as the train pulls into the station, so you should have no problem.

chuffmens
"Track" it "wheel-ly" carefully, then "choo-choose" the right moment, then with a "line" hook it and "rail" it in. Then you can "train" it as long as you don't have any "loco-motives." :-)

Well depending where you live theres usually a station house where you can go inside + buy a ticket or maybe a ten ride pass. If there isn't a station house you wait for the train + when it comes you hop on + a man will come through the different compartments + he will come up to you + ask you to pay for your ride. Don't worry he'll notice you so you don't have to run up to him as soon as he gets into the compartment. Usually at stations they have maps or pamphlets of all the stops + what time they will be stopping at those stops. If they don't have a pamphlet then ask the man you buy your ticket from if he has any. Remember it up to you however to know which stop you need to get off at to get to where ever your going. You need to find out which stop is nearest to your destination. (I sound like a flight attendent lol)
