How do you feel about England.? |
Here in The U.K we have an affinity towards India and still feel guilt over the actions of the British Empire. The problems in Mumbai over the last 24 hours have dominated the news over here and we feel bad for you. I think that it is interesting that even after such a long time we still feel a connection with your country.
I wonder how you view England in the light of our shared history ? |

English people are still a prejudiced lot among Indians. India's seen only 60 years of independence against the 200 year rule by the british. It will take at least another 25-30 odd years to dilute the social prejudices created by the colonial rule. Most people aged 60 and above were born in the pre-independent era, and their parents therefore had very vivid memories of the ugly past. This is obviously carried forward to successive generations albeit with some dilution. Moreover the british left us divided almost like two fighting children in India and Pakistan. Such is the irony that we abhor Pakistanis much much more than the English.
The english stereotype is still the cold, arrogant, aristocratic, rigid and alien individual.
That does not mean that we do not feel a connect with England. There are a lot of positive aspects with which Indians tend to connect with the English. These are largely again a legacy the british left behind. The language "English" is perhaps the most important and crucial cultural export. Others being -- Cricket, Tennis, Convent Schools, Billiards, Snookers, Laws, Constitution, Parliamentary Politics, Democracy, Military setup, Judicial System, etc. It is these aspects that will be embraced and appreciated by future generations which in turn might dilute the prejudices. |

It was primarily the Scots, not the English, who created the Empire upon which the sun never set. |

Man to man the relationship is good. However, as a community, the English still view us a colonial subject and at several times this had reflected in the action to sour the relationship. Moreover there are still different yard sticks used for Indian and others if they want to come to your country.
The British press was highly appreciative when Flintoof took off and wove his shirt at Mumbai and the same press called the action of Saurav as indecent when he did the same at Lords after a memorable victory when India snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
Likewise this English team behaved absolute novice and have never done their homework properly for each venue despite touring India several times, and the Press put the blame on D/L for Indian victory at Indore, when Indian Captain clearly told after the toss that D/L would come into play in the afternoon due to early darkness. He was also spot on last night about the dew factor but KP was wondering about the wisdom of MSD. |

I tried to settle there so many years ago, but I simply couldn’t adapt to British mentality.
The main problem for me was to cope with their air of superiority… sorry, but I deserve a little better than being treated like if I was a woman trying to seek asylum fleeing from third world country… and this is what so many (NOT ALL PEOPLE!!) in UK think… they think we must be mentally inferior because of the brown colour of our skin… they think we eat strange food (rats and cats??? I have listened to so much stupidly). They think that we are not able to do the same job as they do… and they even think it´s okay to be paid less doing the same work and that we would have to say “thank you” for that great opportunity given to us…
Gosh! There are so many snobbish and badly educated people there… staring at you and saying “ah, Indian so…” These people think that Indian women are all oversized and that we eat sweets the whole day and do nothing at all than sitting by the TV… they think we do never say anything against our husbands and if we say something our husbands will beat us up or even kill us… Where do they think we come from? Pakistan? Afghanistan? The cave???
Many of them wonder when I tell them that the most important companies work in India and that the best computer programmers study in India.
What do they think? That we still go around with donkeys?
No, I never felt comfortable.
Most of my friends were also “strangers” like me…
BUT for these British people who really accepted me and were keen on learning also from my culture I must say that they are one of my best friends I have made in my life.
Although I live in Spain now, I go there regularly to see them and they come over to see me here in Spain as well.
Yes, there is too much rain in GB, it´s too cold for me, I still can´t coep with this traditional English food… but it´s a great place to spend a holiday, especially London: great shopping, nice pubs, great monuments… fantastic night life…
Now when I go there I go to see my friends and I have fun, I like to go there but I also like to go back home to Spain, where the sun is and people accept me the way I am.
I love Spain and Spanish people: Open minded, friendly and funny… people who never look down on you because of another colour of skin, looks, accent, religion or traditional background. |

What England has done to Wales was far worse than what they did to India!!!!
It's all to do with brute imperialism. England acting as the bully of the world! Countries like Wales and India are now underachieving because for years we've been exploited by the crooked English!
The sooner the "united" kingdom breaks up the better! |
