How hard is it to move from the US over to England and to live and work over in England?

My goal in life is to move over to London and live and work there for several years. How hard is this to do?

As an American, unless you have a shed load of money to invest here, have your own business or are being transferred by an American company with a branch over here, or you have skills which are in short supply, you don't stand a cat in hells chance of getting employment here. This is because of EU laws which state that priority goes to citizens of the EEA (European Economic Area) when any vacancies need filling.

So, if you truly wish to work here you will need to gain qualifications and experience in something like the medical or teaching field to be able to stand any chance of fulfilling your goal.

See this link for further details...

We would also have the same problems trying to find employment in the US.

it is very difficult and London is expensive beyond imagination. you must be able to find an employer to sponsor your work visa. See below to research this.

Why would that be hard? Get a work permit, plane tickets, move your belongings, etc... I've lived in Hong Kong, Philippines, Taiwan, Switzerland, Germany, England and the United States. It's all just another move...

It really depends upon if you have desired skills that are in short supply in England and whether or not you can fill a position that cannot otherwise be filled with a citizen. I am an RN, BSN who is working with an agency to go to the UK and work because there is a nursing shortage. It is a long process anyway. It will take me between 7-9 months to prepare for the move. Good Luck.

Well you have to take into consideration that England is a very expensive place to live in, expeically London. But its not exactlie hard to live and work here.

erm..if i could i'd swap countrys i wanna go usa but...hmmm im sure my mum tole me this...oh yer its very easy if you live im the eu but im sure from usa to uk is just as easy...you will have to get visas and a green card..and london...like no jobs and are u sure u want to move to this country i find it boring = )

The key to this is either working for a company that has offices in London, or having the skills in a field that the UK needs to fill. For example, Nursing, Social Work, Teaching, and probably a few others.

Then, you have to have a job lined up before you set up your travel plans because the employer will have to apply for the work permit for you to start working. It will be necessary to have the job first, so the company can be the sponsor. Don't expect to just show up and starting looking for a job. You can register with employment agencies/recruiters from the US and they will help you wade through some of the paperwork; at the very least, tell you what you need to do to get started.

I went once on a temporary 6month student work plan, and am now in process to return in a permanent position. It does take a few months to get it all done, including the required criminal background checks for most fields.

It isn't a difficult process, just tedious and takes time.

As I have a friend that has moved there to work it is actually rather hard. You have to have a work visa for anyone to hire you, but yet no one will hire you unless you have a work visa. It is very confusing. My friend eventually begged the guy to hire him and it now doing well. But you cant just move over there with no experience or skills of trade. Why would they want any more losers over there then they already have. Never the less, you must have a degree or a good work experience to go over or the visa people will decline you. Not to mention work visas are expensive. I'm actually moving over there next year for college and my visa is 214 dollars for a little sticker that goes on your passport. Its ridiculous. Hope this helps
