Depends where you are travelling to really - presuming its London, I's say its not much different to life in an American city.

Boris is right about the north...but the south is sunny and vibrant. We have cultures coming out of our ears and the range of food in this country makes us immune to most of the worlds stomach bugs.

Unfortunately the Olympics is likely to bugger everything up because just when we have got used to a multicultural society...and we have managed to imprison most of our least cerebral citizens...we are going to be invaded by foreigners with nothing to recommend them but body odour and an endless stream of cliches expressed through an intelligence murdering media.

I fear a backlash!

It depends where you go in the UK.
Presuming you're going to London, you will find every culture and ethnicity. Compared to every city I know, in London you can get away with wearing anything and doing anything and no one will think you strange. Anything goes. Living there for three years my friends were from all over the world, in every profession going and from a wide variety of religions.

Everyone is in a hurry. Never ever ever stand on the left hand side of escalators (especially on the tube) right hand side for standing, left hand side for walking or running by! If you get this wrong you will get a lot of abuse from Londoners.

The arty crowd is usually found in Shoreditch and the music crowd in Camden but these do mix a lot. Both these areas have nice pubs and clubs and a relaxed atmosphere.

Agyness Deyn is probably the official coolest, best dressed person in Britain at the moment so check out her look.
Have a look at the British versions of InStyle and Glamour magazines for typical high street looks and browse topshop.com as everyone shops at Topshop no matter who they are.

You'll find most people less 'polished' looking than in the US, although that is changing.

In general, among fashionable types, body con is still the predominant look. The skinny leg jean is still staple wear despite the changes on the catwalk.

The British museum is amazing, yes Britain stole stuff from all over the world when they had an empire but at least is has been preserved and the result is fantastic. The egyptian collection is stunning.

The National portrait gallery is a personal favourite and the nearby National Gallery is great too.

There are lots of smaller galleries so check out Time Out- a magazine with weekly listings of absolutely everything (restaurants, exhibitions, gigs, theatre), you'll find it on sale everywhere.

The Globe is nice in the summer when the weather is good, you can see some plays for about £5, there's also an outdoor theatre in the summer in regents park.

If you want to see a show or play (if the cost is an issue- don't go to the big musicals, there is so much fantastic theatre at great prices) try lastminute.com for tickets.

I hope you have a great time.

And about the stores:
Liberty, is great. Beautiful building with a great mix of stuff. Much more exciting buying than the surroundings would suggest.
Carnaby street is good for firetrap, miss sixty, diesel and that sort of stuff.
Selfridges is a big department store on Oxford Street. It's a nice atmostphere for browsing both designer and non-designer brands without feeling pressured.
Browns on South Moulton Street is known for it's great stock, and there is a browns sale store on the same street.
Harrods has a great range of stock and fantastic food halls. There are lots of tacky touristy things to see inside the store but don't let that turn you off it.
Spitalfields market is good on a sunday and there is another nearby market that has a lot of stuff by up and coming designers (just check the quality before you buy). There is portabello market on a fri and sat too but go early!
Hoxton boutique is great for up and coming designers and exclusives on established designers but not all the prices are way out there.
B-shop is another good boutique.

A lot of American brands have seperate design and buying teams for Europe and the UK so don't forget to look in those stores too.

Notting Hill has a few good second hand stores but these have been re-christened vintage and the prices are quite high. For the best vintage clothing, small villages in affluent country areas can have amazing stock, the stores in London tend to know when they have the good stuff and charge through the nose.

The UK is England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland altogether,
What part of the UK?

Are you one of those people who just calls England, the UK?

Luke
The north is brilliant, but I'm guessing you'll be going to London, in which case it is just like any other city: dirty, loud, busy, rude and generally full of tourists or southerners (not sure which is worse)

batty
has regards shopping the uk has lost its britishness or uk, supply to the retail market, or to put it quite simply most products now on sale in the uk are from other countries, anyway but with extra taxes and costs, very little originaly is british made now, so goods are from, elsewhere anyway, and most likely dearer than the country of origin, you can probably find a lot of interest, within uk but everything is so expensive, if you need to travel or stay at places of interest,i live in cheshire,in the northwest,i think chester in cheshire is worth a visit, for americans a lovely historical city that many visit from america, ,the trafford centre in manchester, for shopping, maybe, i would reccommend wales if you like the countryside, for scenery, generally life is good but like anywhere if you have the money to spend, otherwise your options are limited.

lets just say for every 1 person wishing they were entering the UK i know at least 10 who wish they were leaving!!!
