During the day, take a packed lunch. Out of rush hour, no breaks, it would be a good 4 to 5 hours. Leave early morning if you can, following a good nights sleep, take a break after 2 hours, you should be around Leicester/Notts by then. Carry on up to Northallerton, stop at Leeming Bar services (right on the A1) then an hour from there. M1 up to A1, (no need for the M18 now) |

If you are due to hit Sheffield around rushhour on the M1 then my advice is don't. There are speed cameras and roadworks around Meadowhall. Before Sheffield, take the M18 then up the A1. I use it all the time and the bit of new 3 lane motorway up the A1 after the M18 junction is a racetrack! It'll save you loads of time. |

about 41/2 hours depending on the traffic and depending on if you stick to 70...and the time of day...it can be done quicker |

I did junction 29 on the M25 to just past Durham in slightly over 4 hours in February. Go up the A1 it is a much better route than the M1 and you have a better choice of stops rather than dull Motorway service stations. |

Best idea is to go to AA web site and look for route planner
You put in your post code, the destination post code or town...there are several options, and hit the plan my route button there is a map option and you can zoom down to street level at the destination end of your journey, the stages are timed and clearly stated directions help a lot too.Petrol stations are shown, as are speed cameras...er sorry safety devices..not there to collect our dosh...you see. good luck |
