Speaking in cold mathematical terms, it would appear that the current rate of exchange of dollar vs. British pound is 1 GBP = 2.08052 USD - which would mean that $1 = approx. 50 pence. (see http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi)

That being said however, the British pound has historically been a more powerful currency than the US dollar (unfortunately - as the pound's worth utilizes the worth of silver to estimate its value while the US dollar utilizes "confidence" in knowing the ongoing "market value" of the $1) - and given the cost of items in the UK today, you wont necessarily go too far with few dollars in your pockets. I believe though that the rate of exchange (20 years ago or more) used to be much worse for the US dollar. If I am not mistaken in the 70's the pound was almost 4 times greater than the dollar. So at 2.08 - thats actually pretty adequate for the US dollar's continued tug-of-war with the British pound.

Nothing unless you can get someone to accept it!
The official exchange rate is about US$2.07 to 1 Glorious British Pound at present.
Offer to pay me for something in US$ and it'll be nearer $3 to £1 (get the idea?)

The currency rate changes all the time but the US Dollar is 25% less than the pound.
There was a time when the US dollar was exactly half but currency changes every day.
