How much per year would a single young person need to earn in London to lead a nice, middle-class lifestyle?

By this I mean being able to afford owning or letting a residence in a safe, but somewhat stylish neighbourhood that has great tube access to the City and the West End. Also by comfortable, I mean enough money to enjoy a couple overseas holidays a year, dinner out a few times a week at a mid-priced restaurant, theatre, concerts, books, CD's, and satisfy a love for the latest in fashions, etc. Now I'm not talking about extravagent trips to St. Barts or nightly dinner at 5-Star, haute cuisine dining establishments; rather, I'm thinking of a typical middle-class lifestyle that the average single, 20sh, stock broker, lawyer or academic would enjoy in London. How much today would it take in annual income for a single person in their 20s to live that sort of a life in London? Thanks!

All the things you've listed are the reason I left London, and your question has reinforced my decision.
I live in a beautiful part of the world and I don't need to spend any money to enjoy it.
So, to answer your question, it depends on the person. No amount of money would enable me to live a "nice" lifestyle in London.

Go out to dinner 3-4 times per week! What are you on? Fashion, books and CDs every week. Don't want much do you? You gotta be looking at £45k plus. I'm on £38k and I couldn't afford that lifestyle!

Thats a difficult question to answer. People are pretty much spot on, but the lifestyle you aspire to sounds like the kind of people that are just a bit of a myth in london unless they're really, really rich. If you want that lifestyle, you have to work damn hard, and if you're working that hard, you're going to be eating out or shopping in your spare time, you're going to be sleeping!

My friend is an extremely sucessful journalist, earns nearly 50K a year, as does her flatmate who works in PR. They couldn't afford to live in Old Street, which is horrible as far as I'm concerned, so they ended up having to live in Stepney. My boss lives in Primrose Hill, which is lovely, but his flat is tiny and he pays £2000 a month to live there, then again he works three hours a week to earn his wage so he gets other joys! The kind of places you're talking, where they're actually properly nice are Holland Park, St Johns Wood, Maida Vale, Kensington, Hampstead, Muswell Hill, Belgravia, Fitzrovia, Hyde Park etc etc.

Only the proper stinking rich really get to live in these places, at least 50K a year I'd say....

30-40k minimum.

Bear in mind that there will be nany people that will have a lot more money than you so you will always want more.

You could probably live pretty well on £30K, but your average stock broker, or lawyer (not academic, they earn far less - I should know I am one!) would probably be more like £40 or £50grand a year. It depends most on what part of town you want to live, as the really popular areas are much more expensive than the mediocre areas.

I used to get paid about £24K a year, and managed to live well - the only reason being that my friends uncle owned a flat in a very nice part of town so I got very cheap accommodation for a while!

Probably £40,000 per annum.
That's about £2,000 per month after tax...

London is very expensive for all of the activities you list and housing is also at a premium!
