Brick Lane is a urban street in the East End of London. Part of the Banglatown district of Tower Hamlets. It is around 1km long, stretching from the Boundary Estate in the north to Whitechapel in the south. Although it is not pedestrianised, there is very little vehicle traffic.

The north of the street (beyond Bethnal Green Road) is primarily high density residential, mostly built around 1900 by the London County Council. As you go south it is mainly Georgian houses, converted for shop use. There is a northern section of road containing trendy and fashion stores and the famous bagel shops. Coming further south there is a former industrial area including the Truman Brewery which is an exhibition space. There are also lots of cafes around here and bars in converted warehouse buildings: The Vibe Bar and 93 Feet East. Further south there are loads of curry houses, mostly serving Bengali-influenced cooking.

The southern continuation of Brick Lane is called Osbourn Street. This road also has a number of bars and curry houses and connects it to Whitechapel Road/Whitechapel High Street where Aldgate East and Whitechapel tube stations are found. The road is very busy with people in the evening and through the night in the mid-northern section.

"There's a hole in the world like a great black pit
and its filled with people who are filled with sh*t
and the vermin of the world inhabit it
and goes by the name of London"

(Sondheim, Sweeney Todd)

Seriously, it is a rough, run down area but interesting to spend an afternoon looking round & great for curries!

Loads of curry houses. Yum

Asian area with loads of curry houses and geat atmosphere. Don't let all the racists who answer question on this site put you off particularly if you like Indian and Bangladeshi food.

Apart from the many curry houses, some of them serving excellent bangladeshi food, the area is vibrant. There is the Up market on Sundays, and trendy bars and clubs.
The area is steeped in history. It has been an area that migrants have come to for centuries. John Dolland was born in Spitalfields in 1706, founder of Dolland and Aitchison. Bud Flanagan was born here in 1896.
The streets around are georgian, there is a mosque which was a Huguenot church, then a synagogue. Unique for any building in the UK. Christ Church is a Hawksmoore church, and the plague pit in the crypt that was recently emptied gave details of life and death in the past.
Check out Tower Hamlets website for a walking guide. www.towerhamlets.gov.uk
If you just want the curry, try Spice Inn at number 1. Lovely!! Avoid any resturant that have touts outside offering you a discount and free drinks. You will be rippped off.
