How would an American with a criminal record get into the UK? |
I've travelled to the UK at least 30 times over the years. However, I was a naughty boy a few years ago and now have a criminal record (white collar, not that it makes any difference). Apparently I can never EVER travel to the UK for the rest of my life (unless I apply for a waiver that is denied 99.999% of the time). But how does customs know if I have that record? Does it link to the US's system, the NCIC? Is every American who enters by air, sea and Chunnel screened somehow? Is there one way of entry less likely to be screened (Chunnel train?). I am an executive, very well dressed, in case one's 'look' makes you more or less likely to be checked. Any help greatly appreciated. Additional Details Thanks for the many good answers. I should have mentioned that I've already been to EU countries since the legal troubles. What I intended to do is to take the train from Paris to London and try my luck; if stopped, I just go back (I know the first offense is treated as a simple refused entry). But not having been to the UK since 9/11, I wondered if they started scanning EVERYONE's passport and if the system is linked to US records. Or, is it still a random process where your 'look' weighs heavily on whether you're chosen or not. |

You got a lot of misinformation here. Fro one thing, Mexico does NOT do criminal background checks. The U.S., UK., Canada and some other European nations do , as well as Australia. There are random checks, just like the customs checks. The customs agents have a computer program that allows them to run a criminal check on anyone who goes thru..you never know who may be checked. Each country is a sovereign nation and has every right to decide who they will allow to enter their country. The U.S. does not prevent you from entering another country. That is the sole decision of the country you are trying to enter. You may or may not be turned back if you try to enter the u.K. There have been comments n here before from people who have been turned back. |

If you come to the UK you can cite your Human Rights and then you would be allowed in. That is even if there is any way to stop you in the first place. Our borders are relatively open. |

When you enter another country, they can electronically scan your passport. At least this is what I've noticed. They do it randomly. I don't think I would risk it. I hate to say it, but I guess it is the price you pay for being a felon. |

I have a criminal record. And Im nearly off probation. I am from germany but an american citzen at that. My probation officer said that I cant leave the u.s. until im off probation. after that I can leave as I please to other countries and it cant be stopped. Now this was for visiting. Now as for living I wont know. You would have to become a citzen or marry-in and hope for citizenship. Never the less I was told by a good friend that works underneath court systems and I was told the the record cleans after 5 years, how true that goes Im not sure. Heads up mate, your not stuck in this pityful governed country called U.S.A. . Also I never heard of being screened, all you need is the passport and visiting, business, or living passes. From there is where you would get denied. Check with the courty house in your area. ;) They will know more than us on yahoo answers.
Also I just did some research for both our records. at http://www.clearmyrecord.com they work to get you clemencies... if you finished your probation and paid whatever fines. you pay to place your application and they work with you to get it right with the government. it will detail why they help for reason such as the government doesnt take the time to clean records and so forth. call the number and talk to a representative and see what they offer. might help you with what was said "pursuit of happiness", you past should not stop you from making things right and having a better stronger future.
Disreguard these comments on its what you get for being a felon... some just see a record and dont know the story of why.
My best of luck to you. |

this is an orwellian big brother police state and our computers are networked with US agencies. No matter your appearance when your passport is scanned it will instantly show if your ineligible for entry ------ sorry dude. |

haha an executive.. yea right first off.. to be one of those you pass a background check in witch case you would fail because usually an exec is sent overseas to acquire more business and deal with partners..
this is a HUGE problem with america.. once a felon.. it's like a death sentance.. it's not right.. you are being denied your right to happiness!
they will say because you broke a law and brought this upon yourself you made it happen while they are actually not allowing you to fufill your "pursuit of happiness"! where they will say the "pursuit" part means you trying to change their mind and allowing you to leave the US
it's a fact that you cant go to mexico, Canada, nearly any country as they dont want you there...
my question is after I do my time in jail.. if i'm not working for an airline or credit company.. people have no right to see my record! WTF! kiss of America.. land of the slaved, entrapped and other we will eventually be nuked to make way for "GOOD " people... when in reality all the original settlers were all criminals and felons..
try this one because we derive our law from englands law they have a law that says anything once done must always be done so being that the us used to get rid of felony's after 7 years it must always be done that way even though they got rid of that law to keep you working for MIN wage... imagine not being allowed to own a home, gun, vote, possess money or other... it happens every day in this hell hole we call America! SATANS LAND!
Obama for president oh.. I mean BIN LADEN.. (whom shaved and bought an ID named O BAMA!) |
