I'm an American, age 19. Can I legally drink in the UK?

I'm spending a couple weeks in London this winter. I know the drinking age is lower there than here, but is my American citizenship going to affect that? Thanks.
Additional Details
Hey, thanks for the input everyone. I shall enjoy my drinking, more so as it will actually be legal...

You can drink at 18 in the UK. It doesn't matter where you're from. You follow the laws of the country you are in.

18 is legal everywhere else in the world. Go get your drink on...

all the time in the world
is it legal to drink at the age of 19 in the uk ? it's compulsory ! fill yer boots.

Petero
Yes, the legal age for drinking is 18 (it should be higher, because you get these 16 - 20 year old idiots who get drunk on 2 pints and think they can take on the world)!!!!

marmat16az
You will be fine, but no smoking in bars, and stay off pints of Fullers ESB.

Nope! You can legally drink at 18 in the UK as long as you are in the uk, your citizenship doesnt not matter!

a7thdeadlysin
No... your American citizenship does not affect your ability to drink in the UK.

It may be a problem in Canada though. They have a law that is supposed to go into affect that says that foreign nationals must abide by the legal drinking age of their home country... they want to keep young Americans from crossing the border in order to get wasted in Canada.

Have a great time in the UK! Try J.D. Wetherspoons... its a great cheap place to drink and get food. The UK is ridiculously expensive and Wetherspoons are found all over the place.

Yes mate you can be 18 to drink alcohol. They have just raised to smoking age to buy fags and tobacco to 18 as well.O and if you are planning to go to any proper english pubs (wich i strongly reccomend) you must also remember that everywhere inside is a non smoking facinity no smoking areas what so ever its now against the law...just dont forget that. And dont drink then drive lol that is obvious but i think that the drink driving laws are much stricter over here.Have a fun time mate.Lol I live around 3 hours away from london and I have only been about 4 times for a couple of hours, lol watch out for all these terrorists after the bombings 7/7 in 05 lol.I am only joking really that was years ago now....x x x x

Mel
Drinking age has nothing to do with citizenship if you are 19 and drinking age of a country is 19 you can drink simple as that. I believe in UK legal age is 18 or 19 so go ahead and get snockered!

Gordon C
You can drink legally at the age of 18 - no matter your citizenship.

Some upmarket clubs or pubs sometimes have a limit of 21 but that's quite unusual

Oh yes, you're legal to drink over here, but a word of caution - the BEER is considerably stronger than the stuff normally foisted on Americans so approach it with respect. And our pints are 20oz, not 16 so the potential to end up burbling in a corner somewhere is very real (but no less fun).
Having said that, the variety amongst the British breweries is wonderful. If you try X's bitter and don't like it, then the next handpump along will be Y's, and it'll be different.
Please don't waste your trip by sticking to fizzy frozen tasteless lager, you can get that at home!
Mmmm BEER - I could go on for hours....
Mine's a pint, cheers!

When in the Uk you must Abey the law of the land and Uncle Sam has no jurisdiction over here. But some clubs and pubs id anyone under 21 and some places may turn you away. Nothing to to with the law. Most people I know, got served for the first time in a pub at 14-15. And the time we come legal, the novelty has long since worn off.

Yes you will be able to drink here legally, but I would advise you carry some I.D. with you, as we are cracking down on undeage drinkers, and most places will ask for proof of age, if you look under 21.

You can drink at 18 in the UK wherever you are from - you as a person are subject to the laws of the land you are in.

For instance, you couldn't walk into a UK gun shop and buy a pump action riot gun because you are an American, because here they are illegal.

Hope that makes sense.

I personally wouldn't bother drinking though - been there done it, wasted a ton of money and felt like crap afterwards.

But enjoy it if you do - after all, it's very nearly a free world.

No, don't drink until your 21...otherwise alcoholism ensues.
