London is far too varied a place to sum up with a few words pros and cons. People are quick to run it down as dirty or unfriendly but they are too focused on just the central and inner parts. There is so much to do here, if you have the time, money and imagination. Eating out, theatre, museums, bars, music, clubbing, learning, etc. etc.
Where you live and work will make a big impact on how you experience London. It is an expensive city. Even well paid people cannot afford to buy homes and the average UK income is barely enough to pay all the bills and have fun, but somehow 7.5 million people still get by somehow.
London is vast, but you do not have to go more than a few miles from central London to be in areas dominated by terraced suburban houses with gardens. There is also an extensive Docklands area to the east, dominated by modern flats. The outer suburbs are really green and many of them have better transport (fast rail) than the inner suburbs (bus/tube).
If you only have limited budget this will restrict where you can live but you will be able to rent (in slightly grotty but not unsafe) inner districts. The more money you have the more choice and better place you will live in. That said, it doesnt much matter as everywhere in London can be reached by public transport. Working only a short distance from home is rare in London, so you should expect to travel.
You need to work out your budget - how much you will earn and what you want? Live central, near work, greener place, house, modern flat, on the river? There are so many ways to live here. |

I love living in London but like all places there are good areas and not so good. You have everything nearby, theatres, cinemas shops and bars etc. We live on the outskirts so we also have easy access to the countryside.
Bar 10 years, I've lived in London all my life....no place like it!
As for cleanliness...it is clean, just some areas aren't...like anywhere really.
Very expensive. Won't get a lot of house for your money! |

Moving to London from the US is seriously exciting and there are so many benefits. But people don't realize the stress of living in a foreign country. There are so many headaches, getting everything transferred over, and the added expenses of the city. If you have nothing tying you down in the US, you may as well try London for awhile. But don't assume it will automatically be better or an easy thing to do. |

U say your almost positively sure u wanna live here? i guess then u must have visited already! i think London is a city every1 should at least visit, like Paris,Rio,New york and Prague. it is beautiful, architecturally, culturally,Londoners take these things 4 granted.its outsiders!that appreciate London.if you've got money, then u cant beat it 4 lifestyle.like every1 has already said, the arts, museums theatres, fashion ,antiques to food markets, places to eat, really 2nd to none.also as i'm sure you already know the countryside and places of interest, like castles and historical sites are never 2 far away if u drive.so yeh,aat the least come and visit.u wont be dissapointed.p.s idont work 4 the tourism office! although this place gets me down sometimes. I am proud of my country..enjoy! |

well my girlfriend lived there most her life. so this is what i have gathered.
Pros's- Beautiful place, close to other amazing cities, there is no other place in the world like it, soccer games go to one some stadiums hold up to a hundred thousand people, great pubs good drinks good food
Con's- More expensive, don't talk crap about football (soccer) you will get beat up, its a huge city i mean really big easy to get lost, can get really cold, you will probably get ragged on for being American, its gona happen, American money at the moment is worth more then pounds, housing is tight, they are also going to be a lot smaller
over all i would do it, it will turn into a good story someday. and learn the metric system too |

I've lived in London now for 4 years and I absolutely love it - however, I certainly have my 'I hate London' days. I think it is just a matter of getting used to it.
Pros - great nightlife, there is always something to do, great pubs, beautiful parks (Hampstead Heath, Regents Park, Primrose Hill), a great mixture of people from all over the world who share similar values, summer, the tube when it works
Cons - don't expect any customer service (it's very rare!); the weather (I come from Australia), the tube (when it doesn't work), the crowds on Oxford St, having to line up for EVERYTHING!
Hope this helps. I would recommend it, as it is a great experience and you can always go home if you don't like it. |

you can buy a flat in london for the same price as a house where i live, and for what, wages are better but living costs are lots more. Its great if you like busy places and getting up 3 hrs before you have to be at work.like someone else said id deff visit the place for at least a week so you can get a feel for the place. It has got alot of great points, but because its so packed and has these great places its under threat of terrorist attacks, same as us etc. |

I am a Londoner by birth so I guess my answer would be kinda bias. I just want to say that you can't just move here you do need to check the visa options and to do this you need to go on the British Embassy website.
http://www.britainusa.com/
It would help if you had a job to come to. Other than that you have got to provide enough funds to prove that you can take care of yourself as you will not be able to get any public funding or medical care.
If you still want to do it then Good Luck.
The weather is cooler from what you are used to but what we lack in weather we make up for with culture and friendliness. |

There are many different pros and cons to London. Its a busy lively city but can be too crowded.
There are quite a few people here, the traffic is sometimes bad in the morning and evening in certain areas, the weather, would you like to leave the sunny US for English weather??
But for all those who say it is dirty, expensive and over crowded, there are many beautiful areas of London that are clean and beautifully kept such as Greenwich, Hampstead and Regents Park.
It may be expensive when you first come over because the dollar is quite weak to the pound. But London is an expensive city but many people live and survive here so its not too expensive.
There is so much culture and history in London that you will be able to experience, and see some of the wonderful sights. You can get a nice flat or house and just enjoy London.
So I say that the pros out way the cons, its a great move and most of London would welcome a new American.
Look forward to seeing you!!! |

London is really busy, dirty, expensive, noisy and generally unfriendly...I would suggest coming over for a holiday for a couple of weeks to see what you think of us all before moving permanently!
Have you checked to see if you can get a work permit and what sort of work you could do here?
Also the cost of living, especially as the dollar is low against the pound at the mo, could work against you.
However, it is a fantastic city for culture and architecture etc, so we do have our good points as well!
Good luck with your decision |

It's much like any other capital city - exciting but smelly, dirty, noisy. Depends why you want to go - all the friends I have who live there are only there to further their careers (in accountacy and medicine) and can't wait to leave. The shopping, nightlife and culture are great but it is a REALLY expensive place to live. Come to Edinburgh instead - it's THE place to be! |

America...Where in America? It's difficult to gauge how different it might be for you??.......Alaska?....San Diego?????
The cons are the risk you take, the pros's are the best guesses you have!!!!!
Grow up..take a deep breath and see if your mom will let you go out and play!!! |
