u love me

I am American. when i visited the U.K, why did i feel like i was 200 years back!?

Everything I saw felt old-fashioned to me. I love the uk people but the technology compared with America is like way down. I went to the mall and everything was dry. Why is the government not updating things? The cars, language, houses, and clothing felt old school. There are some improvements but for the most part, its just way back in years.
Please tell me and explain the reason for this. Do they like it old school or they just don’t know how to keep up with modern technology.
Additional Details
What I mean by dry is, it’s not lively in another words full of energy. You go to a mall in America, you see everything, cute girls, new fashion, music, people hanging out, and lots of lots party.

some areas of the U.K. are high tech and others are more old fashioned.....just like in the U.S.

you just went to a more old fashoined area...that's all

*DiZzLe*
i'm an american.. i've never been overseas (as much as i'd like 2) but i'm sure they're just not in with the exact same fashion as we are.. they have their own 'fads' over there right? so i wouldnt say it was 'old' just different from us.

also... if everything looked old to you.. The UK is rich in history and art~ maybe you got classy confused with old!!

Disclaimer to my British friends:

We Americans (or Yanks, if you like) don't ALL feel the same way the asker does. More educated Americans actually look forward to visiting other countries. Perhaps the original poster had trouble getting a good look at your country because of the LACK OF SUNLIGHT!

But you Brits have way better beer. WAY better! Mmmm. Beeeer.

Dogs Rock!
No, we can't keep up. Modern technology is too much for us - despite inventing and producing many of the things that Americans now use daily. Jeez, no wonder American tourists get such a bad name. Isn't it terrible that the whole world isn't just like the good ol' U.S of A?!

Bag
Why would you want to come here if it was going to be a mirror image of the US? We like it like this - leave us alone!!

I really don't understand this question. You can buy anything in the UK you can get in the States. As for Clothes just cause Preppy Fashion aint in here does not mean you cannot buy it.
Just cause we don't wanna dress like p.f'in.diddy or wearin jeans with our asses round our ankles.
And don't even start me on **** american cars. Funny all the decent ones in the States are Japanese

Think it depends where you go in the UK. I'm sure there are parts of the US that would be considered back-waters.

I agree that we are behind America in a lot of ways, It's probably because we have more culture and tradition, and you lot have made so many mistakes in your society that we like to sit back and choose to take on only the best of what America has to offer. We aren't in a rush unlike yourselves.

I'd bugger off back to America & have a hamburger, before you catch some class if I were you

1. We INVENTED the internet . . . and our mobile phones often way ahead of yours.
2. The government is updating things
3. The cars are not old fashioned, they are different and generally smaller, because most people don't feel the need to drive a 4x4 to the supermarket.
4. Well the houses were built a long time ago, and they were well built, so there's no reason to go round knocking them down just because they're 20 years old. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
5. The language is not old school, it is just different.
6. Clothing . . . I have heard of Americans coming to the UK to buy their clothes because we get the fashions first.
7. We do know how to keep up with modern technology, and we do. Most have mobile phones, iPods, broadband etc.

Foghorn
We like it old-school.

Let me say straight off that I subscribe to the viewpoint (especially about military matters) that UK + US = OK. I am not anti-American.

The UK has absorbed aspects of American culture over the last 50 or so years - for example McDonalds and KFC, and this type of catering does appeal to the less informed members of our society. Our traditional basic eateries - the 'caff' - bacon and eggs, sausage and chips, the British equivalent of the US 'diner' still survive and flourish.

We do have high technology - the Internet was invented by Tim Berners-Lee - a Briton, and a British entrepreneur (Sir Alan Sugar) ensured that we were at the forefront of computerisation with his early word-processors, games computers, and the Amstrad 1512 and 1640 business PCs.

The first of our Daring Class DDGs (Destroyers) has just started sea trials, and the vessels capabilities are reputed to be better that the Arleigh Burke DDGs that are still being built for the US Navy. In Iraq, our indigenous Challenger MBT (Main Battle Tank) proved itself equal to the US Abrams MBT, and the US Army's light (105mm) artillery piece of choice is the M119 - a British weapon. The US flies the AV8B Harrier - UK technology.

Britain is not 'gung ho' like you Americans. Our army drills to 'left right left right', not 'let me tell you what I've been told, polar bear **** is f@cking cold'.

Is America as up to date as you suggest, or could there be two Americas - the city folk, full of force and excitement, and the rest of the US - a bit more laid back. Looking, as an example, at aviation in the US, much cargo is being shifted, even by Fedex, in 35 year old 727/100s, some air cargo is shifted by Convair 240s (60 years old), and hundreds of elderly 727/200s, 737/200s and DC9/30s are conveying passengers around the US.

Britain operates to its own agenda. We do not wish to be the xx state of the USA. Nor do we need to be, as Europe is as capable as the USA in terms of technology, culture, and, for that matter, financial manipulation. At the present moment, the worlds stock-exchanges are reeling because of ill-advised loans by American Financial Companies to those whose financial liquidity is questionable. I don't think that Threadneedle Street (Bank of England) would quite countenance such irresponsibility, which is why London remains the Financial Centre of the world, rather thatn Wall Street.

We (The UK) are quite happy as we are. The grabbitandrun New York philosophy is being challenged. Furthermore, the influence, both in terms of business and culture, of the USA in Britain is being challenged. Currently, the UK is the best friend that the US can have, but please do not try to impose Yanks are us (US) (pun) on the UK. Don't sell us your values - if we want them, we'll buy them from you.

Judging by some of your other questions I would say you are one big idiot who doesn't even know how to use a spell checker

Go visit Romania, and if you think Romania is far better than UK in term mentioned by you, vote this answer as the best. Hot summer, good beer,
cheers!

Maybe you can rethink the things you call progress. Malls--who cares about malls? American malls make me want to cut my throat.

You don't say where you were. Some towns and cities in the UK pride themselves on keeping modernity out of the centre (for example York). Others (like Basingstoke where I live) have pull nearly everything more than 30 years old and keep rebuilding. Reading is quite a good mixture of old and new and is full of the qualities you describe as "not dry". You probably went to Central London or Stratford or somewhere similar where they love to sell "Shakespearian" or "Victorian" England.
Did you try the London Eye - the Docklands Light Railway - go shopping at Canary Wharf - you just missed out I am afraid!

milk tray.
we English folk don t have the throw away anything that's 1 day old like you Americans do. our houses are the best compared with your wooden huts that blow away every time you have your weekly hurricanes, thanks alot for the global warming, and the plastic surgery, and the obese, the crap films that are now being made, and the war in Iraq, why not go on a trip to the moon, and see if you come back! bloody yanks!

Where exactley in the UK did you visit? Obviously everywhere in the UK isn't the same! Some parts are in the Country & are laid back (which I looove) Just like parts of America are!

Just Like anywhere!

The UK is cool man.........We have LONDON!! You dont get much cooler than that!

englishteagirl
oh mate you have started one here....theres not a country in the world thats more introspective and parochial than the US. they know nothing of the world around them and use their size 10 boots to protect their oil revenues. they are the most selfish people in the world. Get your history right, america's only been around for just over 200 years. If the UK felt like 200 years old then surely you wouldnt even have gained your indepedence. We may not be rich compared to the US but we are only a small country and Britain used to have an empire containing 1/4 of the worlds population, whats the US achieved? a civil war torn state of Iraq and most of the world hating them. I know were in that too but you americans see to have a history of going straight into things without thinking about them. We don't need narrow-minded people like you in this country so don't come back!

Zalem
I think you are right, maybe because of the old houses and buildings. the victorian palaces, the long chimneys, they have also a different culture. And people there are also ageing, so you see lots of old people.

wozzy
i find that Americans are jealous of the uk,s history.
mostly because they don,t have much of there own.
how far does it go back.
a few hundred years or so.
when the uk goes right back to the stoneage.

yep,u sussed us out, we are all just stuck in a time warp but hey! we love it! NOT

Britons have made their country in the times when no one had idea of technology or modern development. E.g America was fighting wars when britan was ruling half of the world. So they were most modern and fully developed at that time e.g London has the oldest metro system in the world. After that clever people from britan realised that there are certain limitations here like shortage of space and lot of dangers like attacing by a foreign countries so they decided to shift their technology to US so that they can have even more modern and developed country which can be built from scratch. If they would have decided to develop UK, then there was less cost involved but loss of all they have made earlier which is not worth so they made US a modern country and kept UK as it was decided not to go for modernization and save money. For their backup on defence, they have US so that no body can attack UK as well so Britan is not in race of technology with america coz they have decided not to and want to keep what they have. This is short story of what I think.
