I am an American thinking of moving to London for a year to see Europe; how difficult is it to obtain a visa? |
I will have a Masters degree in Childhood/Special Education in May08, and I am thinking of moving to London for a year so that I can travel around Europe more inexpensively than I could from the US. But I am not hearing good things about London these days, especially from the people on this board! :) I visited London two years ago and thought it was a beautiful city; but I am torn about moving because of the negativity I hear coming from others regarding London. Any suggestions?? Should I stay or should I go?? Thanks! Depends entirely on the colour of your skin , the lighter you are the more problems you'll encounter , but the darker you are the more laws you will have protecting you ? |

Do you need visa's to come into this country, I thought that you just came over and done what ever you liked. Why not claim housing benefit while you're here that will help towards your rent!! |

Come on over, but why always London? We have plenty of great cities. Brighton has a great club rep, Cambridge is full of history. Research the UK a bit more. You may have been hearing all the negativity about London because it is where the Eastern Europeans flock to, so lots of Poles etc there, as with all communties, migrant or not, they have brought in their own style of criminal elements. |

Awesome! Easy answer! Marry Me!! Haha!!
If you do get back here, check out Brighton, way better then London, and it's on the sea too!!

You have to have a visa to stay in the UK for that long. As an American, that is EXTREMELY difficult because you will need a company to offer you a job and demonstrate that they could not first find a British person or a person from the European Union to do that job. That means you have to have loads of experience (not just the degree) and specialised knowledge.
I live in London and don't understand the negativity. I love it. Like anywhere, there are issues: it's extremely expensive, for one. But, the pluses outweigh the minuses. As an American living here I love that I can travel cheaply to Europe (a benefit as you yourself pointed out). Best of luck. |

Go for it. You'll only regret not doing it when you had the chance. the only way to know it's mistake is to make it in the first place. Should be able to get a visa without any problems. London is a great city and a good base to travel round Europe from. It's not the cheapest city in the world but with a bit of research you should be able to find a reasonable place to stay, houseshares are a good place to start. If that doesn't appeal you could always try hiding in the back of a truck coming over from france, the government have a policy of giving free housing to people caught doing that.Don't let London be the extent of you're experience of the UK try moving around a bit Liverpool's a fantastic, fun and friendly place as is Newcastle Upon Tyne. Manchester is a very cool place and all of these cities are cheaper than London and each have an airport with low cost airlines flying to most major European destinations. Go for it! hope you have a brilliant time. |

Come on over to the USA's 51st (or is that 52nd if you include Washington?) state...
It's easier to see Europe from here but don't expect to see any Europe here - it's just like at home but with a funny accent! :-)
Not sure what the bad stuff is that you've heard about London though? Is it that over here we are nearer to the rest of the world that, generally speaking, dislikes us? Ooooh, dangerous.... ;-) |

London's OK if you have the money and can afford to stay in the more upmarket places but there are alternatives.
If you want to see Europe, why not stay in the Canterbury area. As well as having so much history, it is very easy to get to the ports for travel to France, Belgium and Holland. A short drive to Ashford means that you can use the Eurostar easily. London itself is only about 1hr 20 mins on the train - if that! |

if you're american, you'll probably get a visa easily if you just ask for one. |
