I am confused - i live in the uk in which we celebrate all manor of holidays for different religons -?

But we are not allowed to call christmas by its name at work - we have to call it holiday. Now we are aware of different religons but i am yet to meet anyone of different kins to be insulted by us calling a holiday which is over 2,000 years old - in recent light that in another country you can't even call a teddy bear a name wihtout kicking up a mary stink -- we are so scared of upsetting people - now america has indepence day where they kicked the british out of their countiry and we happily join in - ramadan we accept by its name and nature and any jewish holidays or other nationalities our kids learn about their culture at school - but christmas is the evil holiday and shouldn't be called that - imagine going to a muslin country and saying to them to stop praying as it upsets me.

We have the same problem in Canada. My friends daughter informed me that they're not supposed to say "Merry Christmas" at school anymore, they're to say "Happy Holidays". The crazy part of this story is that she attends a Catholic school. How ridiculous is that????

People come here and we cater to them and I don't understand why?

I respect all religions, whatever feels right to you is OK with me as long as your not hurting anyone.

That being said, people come to Canada for a better life, good for them, I think they're very brave to move half way around the world to a place where they don't even speak the language BUT part of the reason it's better here is that this is a country that was built on Christian values..do unto others, love thy neighbour...etc etc.... and now those values are suddenly not acceptable.

THAT is what p's me off.

You are confused. If you work somewhere where you're not allowed to say Christmas, get another job. Then claim constructive dismissal on the grounds of religious discrimination.

maran
I totally agree with you.

Who is not allowed to call Christmass Christmass? (double s =correct spelling} The more one accedes to these stupid requests the more I would do it. What can the firm do, sack you? No way. Carry on calling it Christmass before the negative idiots win.

I never thought I would live in the UK when the idiots took over the asylum......but they are doing!!!!!!!!!

Yes you said it all. That is the price of living in a multi cultural society with our borders open to anyone.

It;s been Christmas for 2000 and as far as I am concerned it is still Christmas. PC has gone too far in this country and it's about time we started to put our foot down.

snugglebumfury
Excuse me,if you live in UK and work in UK,and your not allowed to call your holiday christmas there`s something wrong.
Our country not theirs,do and say as you wish, stuff them all.
My god they are slowly taking over aren`t they?

Ollie
Hi,I agree with you.Only its not the ordinary people who are upset its the do gooders. My Husband works in a Muslim country. In 2002 we got a beautiful plate engraved with merry christmas & happy new year.

If you want to call it Christmas then call it Christmas. Whats the big deal? Ok so the PC brigade don't like it, f**k it. By not saying things how they are they win. It's not Festivus or the rather bland "holiday" its Christmas and as a Christian country we celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas.

muggle
I agree with Dee Cee. If it were me, I'd keep saying it.

Absolutely, it is pathetic and disgusting that we the British are always supposed to kiss the buts of every fanatic and ethnic group to make the happy, if they are not happy with our customs then they should all get up and go somewhere that do what they want, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran or Saudi Arabia where other religions are outlawed, This has all come about to try and please the Muslim extremists, no one ever mentioned changing anything for the Jews, Buddhists, Hindus they just got on with their thing in their own way.It is simple if you don't like it here, bugger off.

fantasia.
LOL Good one!! You wouldnt get far with that would you?Haven't you ever thought how stupid we are here? Well think about it!!! I am going to call christmas CHRISTMAS until the day I die....I AM going to call a negro a negro all my life till I die. I am going to call a bus a bus all my life. I will call an Indian an Indian and not an Asian for the rest of my life...I am going to say I am right when I am right and I will say I am wrong when I am wrong and no one will stop me even if they tape my mouth I will say it in my head and in my soul and they cant take that away from me. I will repeat again and again I am not racist these are words we have always used and I am not going to change now for anyone. We had freedom of speech once...where has that gone to? Which other country in the world is dictated to by minority groups ? Guess it was our fault in the first place because we took on the Spanish saying "Mia Casa Tua Casa" and they all took it literally...our house became theirs !!! Now we are disporic!!! Ah well thats because we are so generous and can afford to give away our country for nothing.

we have let every other culture dictate their own laws and rules to us, and gone along with it for fear of being racist, now we are the underclass in our own country, i have nothing against someones religion, but for example a sikh is exempt from wearing crash helmet but i am not, Why?, the law should be the law, a sikh in an accident is going to be worse off than me, this country has gone down the pan

What is interesting, is that we are so scared of offending other religions.

Now, by not calling Christmas what it is, isn't that insulting Christianity?

the problem is exactly what you say, people dont want to upset the ethnic minorities.
it even went into the world cup a few years ago the council told everyone in bicester that we were not allowed to fly the england flag anywhere where other people could or might see it, not in or on cars, in windows etc. they fined one of our neighbours for it in the end as he had a flag hanging out his bedroom window as it could (not had) caused offence.

it seems that everyone and anyone can come into the uk and their rights and views are above the british peoples however like you said if we went to somewhere like sudan and told them we dont like you preying and we dont like you having any of your religious symboles etc around we would end up beheaded!
most countries have adopted "you live in our country; abide by our rules and laws and if you dont like something then tough go somewhere else." but not the uk its the lefties that make it such a pain to be british at times i havent heard of one person from the ethnic minority moan about our holidays yet.

you wait they will be banning Royal Britania and calling easter "happy chocolate egg day" soon!

I also worked somewhere where we were told we had to refer to Christmas as holiday. I refused to do this as I think this is ridicules and creates bad blood. Also just for arguments sake: If we all agreed and called Christmas - Holiday. The word Holiday looses it`s meaning and we have to invent a new word for all the other holidays we have. Of course having been using the word holiday to mean Christmas we might well end up being told to not use this word anymore seeing as it will offend some people. So why not stick with the word Christmas in the first place.

Your right M8 Christmas is Christmas and no one is going to dictate to me any different .This is a Christian Country who lets people of different faith's to practise without hindrance to their Gods
I have in the past seen our Christian religion and the Jewish religion ridiculed yet we are not in the streets shouting death threats to other people of a different religion

Dear SD
The answer to the 'why' of your question is quite simple - misunderstanding. I am a Christian who has worked as a consultant for religious educational matters with a Muslim government and nation. I have lived in their homes, and worked with them at this kind of level. My overwhelming impression is that Muslim people and nations have no problem at all with Christians following their reilgion and being both spiritual and committed to it. They actually expect it and would encourage it. Granted, they would not want you to preach the Bible on their streets but they would expect you to have the freedom to do that in your own nation. They love and respect family and are probably most concerend with family breakdown - especially as they see it in the West. The confusion about offending other religions comes in from those in this nation, usually with a political agenda that is often anti-Christian. These are the ones wrongly claiming Chirstmas and the like offends on behalf of people they don't really understand and have nothing in common with! We found as committed Christians we were accepted for who we are and what we believe even when that was differnt and challenging. People asked us lots of questions and were always very happy with our following our own faith. Christmas and whether or not Christians follow it in the UK is really a non-issue to them. Family breakdown, loss of respect, declining morals and sexual immorality is what they are most concerned about. This is the legacy of the West and of course Christainity is often seen as somehow integral with this. Ultimately, the pressure on Christmas and the like is not from Muslims. The ones I have lived and worked with I know would rather see sincere Christain spirituality resulting in good family relationships - which sadly it often does not! There is, in this nation, a strong anti-Christain bias in government and politics at all levels which, along with others I have experienced a number of times first-hand. This is the real source of the anti-Christmas lobby in the UK.

because everyone else is jealous that when they die they are going to hell, so they try to upset the christians on earth as much as they can, cause we wont see them in heaven..

It's pathetic isn't it. This is one of the many reasons why me and my family are sadly leaving this country. political correctness gone mad.

I dare you to dress up as Santa Claus and go in to work... just see what happeneds. They can't fire you, and if they do just go to the Daily Mail and earn some money!

michael l
Well I'm glad there wasn't spineless people like you around in 1939. What can they do? You can't be sacked! And Christmas predates Christianity.

Angel
I will never go down the American root of calling Christmas, The Holidays.

To those Americans......yes, in this feckin country, if you work for places like the Local Government, who pride themselves in employing gays, outcastes, ethnic minorities and any other runt that can't get a job anywhere else....and pride themselves on PC ness...the disease that started as a joke in the USA....then yes, you will get sacked/fired for "Apparently" insulting these minorities.
The minorities didn't give a shyte until the so called righteous decided to speak on their behalf....how belittling is that!!!!

As for the Christmas, all I care for is the days off work. There is no god, no christ, no prophet, no budha, no moham. You are all arguing over who has the best imaginary friend. It's funny how religious freaks are exempt from being mentally ill...the hospitals would be as big as football stadiums. And, those absolute lunatics in some of the american "Christian churches" are beyond help, their behavior is as mad as the Muslims they are trying to wipe out.
Get a life, get out of prayer.

Rose
How do you mean you aren't ALLOWED to call Christmas by its name at work?? You can't ask your friend "What are you doing for Christmas this year?" --- you have to say "What are you doing for holiday this year?"???? Who told you this, and what will they do to you ? Is it a law, like not using obscene language?

PS It is "all MANNER of holidays". "MANOR" is a type of house.

Finished?

"....in which we celebrate all manor of holidays for different religions." Do we? My recollection is that we receive (by law) paid leave for Christian holidays in the UK, not for Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Jain, Hindu, Taoist or any other religious festivals; believers may celebrate these festivals, they may choose to take leave when they arise, but, "we", do not celebrate them in quite the same way as we do Christmas or Easter.

I doubt you are, "not allowed", to call Christmas by its name at work. What would happen if you did? Would HR discipline you? Sack you? I think not. I think too that if you look into Christmas, you may just find that it is not originally a Christian feast.

But hey, I guess you feel better now you've got all that your chest.

Sweet ♥
Were you educated in Britain? I thought so.
