I was brought up in Brixham in Devon, and to me, it is the most beautiful place in the world. And I am half Italian and love Italy too, and have visited many beautiful places in the world.
The West Country feels llike home to me, and it is an excellent choice for a holiday.
When people say "Go to Spain..." it is probably partly because of course anywhere in the UK has unpredictable weather. But even in the rain, there are things about Devon and Cornwall that make it worth while and different from everywhere else in the world!!
Brixham used to be a small fishing port - now it has expanded and has a lot of summer visitors. One of the other answerers suggested Paignton which is next door to Brixham and Torquay. You can take a boat trip across Torbay and visit all three of these towns if you want - they're all very different. Torquay, with it's palm trees and "Riviere" feel, is more sophisticated and has some good night clubs. Paignton has the best sandy beach, good for young children. The sand there is a rich reddish colour!
Brixham has some pretty coves - try Fishcombe cove for a tiny pebbly beach with beautiful views around it - on a sunny day, it resembles the bay of Naples. Brixham is an artist's paradise - like St Ives, in Cornwall, a lot of painters live and work there because of the beautiful quality of the light. The town is full of quaint streets and steep steps. If you like sailing, fishing or just chilling you will love the place. And Berry Head Country Park is a beautiful walk past rare flowers and birds and parrts of a Roman Fort. So there is something for everyone.
Woolacombe is pretty too - also in South Devon. The beach has surf and sand dunes!
I recommend Cornwall too! Agree that Bude is great, and you can surf there. St Ives, as I've already mentioned, is great and Mousehole. And a visit to The Eden Project is well worth while.
Don't forget the TASTES of Devon and Cornwall!! In Mousehole, the speciality is Stargazy Pie! Then of course there are the true Cornish Pasties and Devon Clotted Cream - which is delicious on chocolate cake and ice-cream as well as on the traditional cream teas.
I hope you have a wonderful holiday. |

Hi. You Should definately visit the eden project. I thought I wouldnt enjoy it as its a giant greenhouse but theres loads going on in there and is really interesting. Newquay is great for night life and surfers and the cream teas are to die for in padstow. |
