Visit http://www.londonforfun.com/index.htm to give you a quick idea on the touristy stuff that's in London. The obvious ones are Buckingham Placae, Parliament, Tower Bridge. If you are only down for a weekend, you may not necessarily have time for the musuems, although they are free to get in. Once you are in London, get yourself an Oyster card - you pay a £3 deposit which is refunded when you return the Oyster card, you top it up with money and use it for travel - it will work out more convenient and cheaper than paper tickets.

depends on what you like....history, culture, architecture, shopping.....
The changing of the guard, outside Buckingham palace is a popular sight.
Petticoat lane is a nice street market - see it on saturday between 9-ish and 5-ish (antiques, but lots of mixed stuff as well)

I just got back from London. I loved it! Great people, great pubs. too much to do not enough time. If you have never been and like to shop, go to Harrods, have tea. Tower of London, take the tour. Nobu for dinner, and the Blue bar for drinks ( It's at the Berkeley hotel) I'll be going back. Yes it's not cheap but worth every pound!!!!! Also I really felt safe. I'd like to know these people that say it's not safe if they have ever been?

Felidae
St Paul's Cathedral (Go early and not on a Sunday)
South Bank (Day or night)
British Museum (Go Early)
Soho (Day or night)
Mayfair (Great to walk around)
Hyde Park

Not Oxford Street - way too busy

That'll do for a start

Only for a weekend?! Boy, you must be joking...:-))). One tip - take a double-decker bus no. 11 from Victoria Station to the City - the cheapest sighseeing tour. Goes near such major landmarks as: Westminster Cathedral, Westminster Cathedral, Parliament, Whitehall, Trafalgar Square, Strand, Royal Courts, Fleet St., St. Paul's, Bank and Royal Exchange.

Go see the "Jack the Ripper " walking tour. My son and I went to London and went everywhere but , we have to say that tour was the best thing we ever did.

Westminster Abbey (Big Ben, although it's not as big as you think), Buckingham Palace, Traflager Square, Hyde Park, see all of it. The Tower of London tour takes about 4 hours and about $30 US per person, so do that only if you're serious about history. You can still see it on the outside for free, and I think the best view is around back. There's a free observation deck and you can get some great pictures.

Take the Metro (subway). It's cleaner and safer than the ones in the US. You can get an all day pass for about $10, I think. It goes to every place in London. Cheaper hotels are in the Golder's Green section. It's a Jewish neighborhood, and has lots of interesting shops. Be sure to check out KFC...Kosher Fried Chicken (yes, they realyy have one). Stayed at Solomon's Hotel, which was in a safe nieghborhood. 4 of us + 1 infant split a large room w/bathroom & had breakfast in the AM included for about $80 US.

I was there in july, it was lovely. I liked St. Catherine's docks. Really nice place to hang out, sit by the water, watch the ships and have a coffee.
Have a lot of fun!

Well my favourites, in no particular order:

Science Museum - has loads of interactive stuff in Launch Pad
British Museum - sexiest gift shop ever
Covent Garden - the market, the shopping, the cafes
Comedy Store - Saturday Stand-Up pricey but good
Hyde Park/St Jame's Park - green in the city, weather dependant

Also my friends and I have often jumped on a bus in any direction, sat on it for 20mins and wherever we ended up after that we'd find a restaurant and eat there. It's always fun and you can find some great restaurants that way. Only thing is you have to remember where they were!

Enjoy your trip.

Palace of Westminster, of course.

Oxford street is a good place to shop. And I think Windsor Castle is a good choose. London Tower Bridge is worth too see, too. And if you like art. You can go to Tate Museum. It's great!!!
